Multiple attempts to wreck truck on TV
I was bored, so did a little surfing and checked out Top Gear's web site, a British car show on BBC that I used to watch (don't get BBC anymore ). They have a few new video clips and this one was amazing! If you have 15 minutes to waste (plus load time if slow connection), check it out!
The guys try to wreck a Toyota Hilux pickup truck by crashing it, totally submerging it in sea water for a half day, setting it on fire, and finally ... naw, I won't spoil it. oopsies forgot the link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/topgear/downloa..._broadband.ram fast conx speed http://www.bbc.co.uk/topgear/downloa...narrowband.ram slow conx speed Last edited by Bipa; 08-27-2005 at 05:30 AM. |

Yep, they just had those clips on the US version of Top Gear about 2 weeks ago.

Real media files. I've been RealPlayer-free for the better part of a decade. Curious as I am, it just isn't worth it.

Thank goodness for internet broadcasters, or else I'd be paying a fortune in monthly satellite fees. Getting American TV in Germany isn't easy or cheap for us regular non-military folks. So what's your beef with RealPlayer? I haven't had any trouble with it over the last 2 years or so. I agree it was a pain before, but now, along with my DSL connection, it's pretty good. |

Like Tim-H, I don't know about it anymore, but for the few years when I tried to use it, I endured a lot. I'm still bitter about the hours and hours of headaches I suffered. The symptoms were the same on all the computers I used it on. They would always run slowly after installing RealPlayer, it would lock up the computer randomly, and often crashed just after it finished doing anything, such as download enough of a file to start playing, or after it finished playing the file. The interface was horrible and had no useful features, plus it was the only thing that played those formats - which were no better than the MPEG-based formats, and it's not like those weren't available at the time. Real Networks dumped a ton of money into pushing their product and that's the only reason they still [barely] survive against a handful of other thriving, yet under-funded products and formats which are superior in just about every way. I simply don't use their products or formats and I hope they go out of business. It would be better for the whole world if they did.
I feel similarly about Adobe Acrobat. Just like RealPlayer, it also has a gazillion bugs that causes all sorts of ill behavior in the Windows environment, and it's also inferior to many other formats. I can't tell you how many times I've been sent 10MB PDF files that can be reduced to 100KB text files. I hate having to wait for the Acrobat plug-in to load so I can view two lines of text. I'm just waiting for some hackers to get really pissed off from trying to use Acrobat, and target that product specifically. |

Err... just so there's no misunderstanding here. I didn't say I like it... just that I use it and haven't had any major problems lately. Then again, perhaps my idea of a major problem is a bit different than for other folks. I don't get too worried until smoke starts coming out of the tower

Real player works fine for me on the few occasions I have to use it. I agree with you on Acrobat though, hate that thing...
Anyways, that video was pretty cool. I'll have to show it to my roommate who said he'll never buy a foreign truck. |

There's a TopGear special DVD that has all the clips of that truck getting beat up. It's also on torrent sites for those who don't want to buy it.

I have quite a few files that are in acrobat format. I have heard some complain that they are, but what elese should I have them in so they are available to every one?

Text files should be in text, rich text, or html. Images should be in JPEG. If you have the right software and you know what you're doing, you can put text in JPEGs too. If it isn't done right, it'll be very difficult to read. Microsoft had a format way back in the day that was very similar to what Acrobat uses, but except for the built-in text recognition, it was better. The file sizes were much smaller, and just about everything was scalable without compromising quality, much like true-type fonts. I didn't even know it existed until I was send a CAD drawing in that format and had to find a viewer for it. That was years ago, and now I can't remember what the heck it was called. I guess it doesn't matter anyway, because it never caught on. I've heard that Mr. Gates is going after Acrobat though, so maybe I'll see it again under a new name.
If you have multi-page documents that are mixed text and imagery, Acrobat is the way to go. It still sucks, but for compatibility reasons it's a necessary evil. Unfortunately Adobe knows they have the market by the horns. All their products have great functionality, but are poorly written, slow loading, slow running, memory hogging, computer crashing spaghetti code. |

I hear HTML is pretty universal

Yes. Yes it is.
...but not all browsers display the contents exactly the same way, and if you want to add pictures, suddenly there are other files to deal with. |

Remember that the average computer "driver" just wants to get the job done as cheaply and easily as possible. They don't really care about the esoteric details of RAM use etc. It either works or it doesn't. They know the basics of how to use it to do what they want/need, and haven't the time or inclination to learn more. I would suggest for now to stick with Acrobat, given that it is easily and widely available, just about everyone on the 'net knows it and chances are good they already have it installed. Eventually, something different and hopefully better will come along, win public acceptance, and replace Acrobat. Just my 2 euro-cents' worth |
