Would you keep her???

Ok....I'm coming to the people who appreciate the car. I believe the tranny's going out, again. The second was put in @ 92,000.
She's at 174,000 now.
It started slipping between 1st and 2nd a week ago. I called the dealer and told them what it was doing. I had planned on getting the trans serviced. They told me that it sounded like tranny was going out and the only adjustment was for a band at third gear. They suggested I get it flushed. Did it. Didnt fix problem.
That shop told me fluid was dirty but didnt find any metal. Referred me to trans shop to see if they could adjust. Told by the trans shop that no adjustment could be made. Quoted 1200.00 on the low end to 2200.00 on the high end. Told me to drive it in manual (slip hardly noticable when I do this) Ok my dilemma....I absolutely LOVE this car. I know the engines been serviced rituelistically by myself and previous owner(maybe too often, every 3000 miles) wheel bearings have been done once. I was told I needed new front struts and mounts at last oil change. Had second opinion and they said wasnt a safety issue but were worn. I planned on doing them with the "tax refund" and this hits me! Single mom, one income, willing to work on her for the minor stuff,(have changed front pads) but scared gonna put the money into her and be stranded when the next "big thing" comes up.
Break down.....Engine seems to be great condition, no leaks and serviced ritualistically!(love that word) Wheel bearings done around the same time as second tranny at 92,000. 4 new tires in December 2004. Front brake pads June 2004, alternator, February 2004. I know she needs front struts and mounts.... What do ya think? 174,000 miles, Would you keep her if she was your only form of transport and you couldnt do the work yourself? Closest family in Colorado(thats where I got her)....Your thoughts would be appreciated and definately taken into consideration! You guys are the experts as far as I'm concerned!
Thanks!

Hi Mel

I am sorry to hear about the tranny. Some questions - did you service the tranny at all after the rebuild? Is there a tranny filter or cooler installed?

That is a hard question - to keep it or not if it is your only transportation. I would keep it, but that is me.

I would say that I would try one more thing before you do anything else. I would try one more thing and I will PM you with the information. Let's see if it works. Good luck.

Hi Earl,
I know previous owner had trans serviced after rebuild but not sure when, will call her to find out. As far as filter and cooler are concerned.....Not familiar with exactly what they did with the rebuild. I am sure that she never received ANY of the updates I've seen you guys talking about when it comes to tranny, so my guess is what ever she came out of the factory with is what they put back in.

You got 82K out of the 2nd tranny. That's "fair" considering the SVX's propensity to drop trannies. The tranny IS the big thing.
What vehicle can you buy for $2,200 as a replacement that would guarantee you piece-of-mind for another 80K?
Seems you've done most of the regular maintenance that will keep you safe on the road for quite a while. I've driven several cars over the years well into the 200K plus range with no ill engine effects. Follow the recommended servicing (fluid changes & added cooler) that has been recommended ad nauseum on this site, & you'll be fine. It also helps to be an SVX fanatic. You seem to be qualified.

Good luck, Ron.

We can give you more information on the transmission filter and cooler if you need it. Good luck and keep us infomed as to what you find out. I am also looking forward to hearing about your other experiment.

Mel, you could always take that $2200 and invest in a 5-speed conversion and be done with it. Once that is done the only thing to worry about on the car is the wheel bearings. It'll be pretty much bullet-proof for as long as you own it provided you maintain it like you have been. Best of luck with whatever you decide. Ron has a good point though - can you buy another car for $2200 that will give you another 80k trouble free miles?

Johnny

Guys,
feel like an idiot because I work at computers all day, but dont know how to reply to each of you, one at a time so bear or is it (bare?) with me answering you at the same time...If anything I 'll give you a laugh or smirk, whichever it may be.....Not use to how this works thats why I dont "talk" much!

Earl,
Check your e-mail and Thanks!

Ron,
your reading my mind.... I'd much rather take a gamble on the known, then the unknown!

Johnny,
5 speed? Interesting concept! Will definately look into it. I've always preferred a manual(I think I like the control!)

Danny,
Double what I said to Johnny and thanks!

Thanks to all for your input!

I'll probably become a nuisance, with questions, but I'll take a hint if you dont respond~
Thanks again,

Thanks, Mel.

would you keep her?

Hey guys!

Heres one for you....
Dad talked to a guy who owns a tranny shop in Co. Has worked on quite a few SVX's and says because trans seems to be working in manual, I need to get it "scanned" Says he thinks its possibly a solinoid.
NOTE: Want to make sure you understand how I'm driving her now just encase I'm doing something I shouldnt be.
I put her in second when taking off. I shift by listening to her and watching rpms. Nothing out of the ordinary when driving her this way. Goes from 2Nd to 3rd smooth and 3rd to D smooth.

So here comes the questions......
1. How many solinoids could this involve?
2. Is this something any trans shop should be able to handle or should I take it to the dealer for this? I would really prefer to take to a shop before I take to dealer so I can find out if this dealer is any good or just really trieing to ream me.

Talked to a gal at one of my favorite watering holes and she said when her car was having same problems(not an svx though) the shop kept getting same message(solinoid bad) so they kept changing them. She got reamed of course because after changing them, never fixed problem and she ended up replacing the tranny. These people were supposed freinds of hers that had a trans shop.

So I thought I'd fly this solinoid theory by you guys to see if it holds any water and sounds like something you would do.

Thanks in advance for replys.

I will be ecstatic if my tranny holds to 170k+.

Mine was overhauled at about 94k, so far put about 5k on it.
