More Oil!

This question is similar to Clarkrussells question.....Not sure where my oil leak is but obviously I need some seals and gaskets. I've browsed through the searches too see what others have done........I will be taking the car to the dealer to have this leak fix performed...Should I purchase the seals myself from Subaruparts.com? or will the dealer charge me the same or more for the seals when they do the fix?

Now has anyone purchased the Engine gasket and seal kit for $240 on subaru's website?....And what does it consist of?....there is no description?

At the same time, I will have my timing belt replaced.....since the engine will be more accessible, what else should I have replaced?....I'm thinking oil pump and water pump....but I read somewhere that there are 4 cam seals, oil pump crank seal, valve cover gaskets, front engine seals......am I missing anything else??

Sorry if these questions have been asked a thousand times before.........Im still a N00b though!

Thanks all,

Matt

I don't imagine a dealership service shop would be too keen on installing parts you provide, regardless of the source. Before a wrench gets turned, I'd get a complete, written estimate from the dealership, with parts costs itemized. Compare these to subaruparts.com prices. Negotiate as needed.

These are the gaskets that can potentially leak oil:

(2)-----806732150-----Oilseal.32x45x8--------------$6.11-------$12.22
(1)-----806923060-----O.ring-----------------------$2.27-------$2.27
(1)-----803942020-----Gasket----------------------$3.01-------$3.01
(1)-----806733030-----Oil Seal---------------------$5.46-------$5.46
(1)-----806919050-----O.ring-----------------------$1.97-------$1.97
(1)-----806786040-----Oil Seal---------------------$8.66-------$8.66
(3)-----803928010-----Gasket---------------------$1.35-------$4.04
(1)-----13270AA031-----Gskt Rocker Cover Rh------$10.63------$10.63
(1)-----13294AA020----Gskt Rocker Cover----------$6.06-------$6.06
(1)-----13294AA030----Gskt Rocker Cover----------$6.06-------$6.06
(2)-----11832AA010----Gasket---------------------$3.90-------$7.80
(1)-----13272AA031----Gskt Rocker Cover Lh-------$11.39------$11.39
(1)-----13293AA011----Gskt Rocker Cover No-------$6.06-------$6.06
(1)-----13293AA020----Gskt Rocker Cover No-------$6.06-------$6.06

Total -------------------------------------------------------- $91.69

They aren't expensive, but there are some I've never seen leak, but for a few bucks, might as well get them all.

Some of these are not for the faint of heart. The rear main seal requires seperating the engine and transmission. When you do the front seal, you might as well put in a new oil pump, water pump, and timing belt.

Seals are typically pretty inexpensive, so it's not worth insulting a dealer by trying to provide them - even if they're genuine replacement parts. If the seals turn out to be defective, or they accidentally wreck them tryint ot install them, replacing them is only going to be more complicated.

Very clear components list...thanks Doug.
I will definately go and get an estimate with them and explain to them what I want done........or what they suggest as well.

Only problem with dropping the car off is that if I don't have the gaskets and seals, Subaru usually has to order them and I end up waiting 1 week to a week and a half just for them to get the parts...then an additional 3 days for the work performed. (seems they never have the parts on the shelf.....but then again, not many svx owners in Ohio)

Taking an SVX to the shop usually results in a parts delay. Unfortunatly, that's the nature of the beast. Its rare, so are the parts

A ten year old car may not be the best daily driver. It might be good to get a cheap second car so you can let the SVX sit while parts come in. Better yet, just get a second SVX

Have 'em get the parts before you drop-off the car.

Well, I've got my 2001 silverado.......running good and my 90 legacy is STILL kickin......minus the chunks of rust falling off everywhere.....It's really neat with my legacy...I can have the music turned up with the windows and doors closed and can hear it perfectly while standing outside (you can see the speakers from inside the doors....LOL)

I'm letting the SVX become my project car.......It's just that I'm too impatient and have no money
Can anyone relate??

This has all the gasket you would need and more. It has EVERY gasket and seal that is used on the engine including, head gaskets, water pump, intake manifold, exhaust mainifold, valve covers, o-rings for coolant pipes, cranks seals front and rear, cam shaft seals and more. I purchased one once but never used it and returned it unopened.

Interesting....
So would it be wise to go ahead and purchase this gasket and seal kit?....or should I just order from the list Doug provided above and not go overboard.

Thanks,

Matt

wash the engine from all oil, drive it for around 1 hour and then check again where the oil is coming from... you should save some $ at the mechanic's shop if he tries to rip you off by stating that your car needs gaskets, seals, pumps, etc........ whereas it only needs some of those.... you will know what you need, buy them and take them to your mechanic.... trust me

I'm in the process of getting a quote for the labor to have Subaru perform this service for me.....it's not going to be cheap though....they are working at $85/hr.........ouch!!

But they did give me a quote on the price for parts only as I requested.....$500!! this includes water pump, oil pump, gaskets, seals, and timing belt..........I think I'll get them myself, which I should be able to at cheaper prices.
