OK, this sucks ass. Ocala got frikin pummelled. My car was hidden under a car port, but just driving like 5 miles it looks like i went muddin. There are trees down everywhere, fences blown down, and my cable is still out Yeah, it doesn't matter we're just going to get plowed down by hurricane IVAN next weekend. GRRR if hurricane francis just had to come through, the least it could have down was cleaned up some of the trash (homes) around here. oh well...

NASA got hit, too!

From the latest "NASA News" email all NASA employees get....

"The most serious damage reported so far is to the center's landmark structure, the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB), and to the facility that manufactures Space Shuttle Thermal Protection System tiles and blankets.

Sustained wind of more than 70 mph was recorded during the storm. Approximately 1,000 panels were blown off the VAB. In
some places, exterior panels and underlying sub-panels are missing, leaving the interior of the building exposed to the elements. There are several holes, including one estimated to be 50 feet by 50 feet, in the building. Emergency operations personnel have not entered the VAB, as several loose panels are still hanging from the building and present a safety hazard.

The KSC Space Shuttle tile and blanket facility's roof is partially torn off, and there is significant wall damage.
Damage to the facility and its effect on the Space Shuttle Return to Flight effort is not yet known. The building housing International Space Station hardware and modules appears to be in good shape. KSC was powered down last week as Frances approached. Emergency operations teams are working to restore electricity and phone service to the center. "

-Bill (feeling better that he stayed at GSFC instead of taking KSC's offer...)

Hi folks,

thanks for all the kind thoughts. My family is OK - which is the first priority.

Just got electricity back today, some will be another week without power. the house has some damages...not sure if we need a new roof or it can be patched. water stains on the ceilings, bugs invaded, etc.

The landscaping took it in the shorts. we have tree in the front yard that looks like it's wintertime - no leaves left. lots of broken branches (on one tree all the branches on the east side are gone).

Kennedy space center reported the highest gusts of the storm at 124mph.

the SVX stayed in my garage through the storm with no issues. Took the wife's 4Runner to Orlando to ride out the storm....Solar, didn't even try to look you up, too much stuff blowing int he wind, plus with two kids, a handicapped sister, dog, etc...

In the final analysis, there's good things and bad things about living on a barrier island - but enough good that we'll stay - happily, it looks like Ivan will be leaving us alone on this round.

Good to hear all are OK, and the machinery is safe.

My best friend Mike and his wife Ann are on contract in the Caymans. The islands are being lashed right now by Ivan, travelling north @ 8mph, so they will be pummelled for about 24 hours.

Spare a thought for all who are taking the brunt of the weather.

It seems to be an angry year.

Joe

Joe,

I sincerely hope your friends are OK. My brush with Francis and 124mph gusts are nothing compared with Ivan. Yesterday, Air Force hurricane hunters measured a gust within Ivan at 215mph and sustained winds at 165.

This is NOT a good time to be in the Caymans

Any chance that they evacuated, Joe?

If not, they have our prayers.

Ivan is indeed "the Terrible".

No Don

No chance of evacuation.

They are teachers, so Mike's principal concern will be about their charges. Even if evac was on, he would not go.

On the annivarsary of 9-11, I am proud of all you survivors out there, and would hope to have the courage to protect my own loved ones, and pull the flag out of the mud when/if my turn comes.

Stay safe, be sensible and careful, and for the strong ones, protect the weak without endangering your life or any of your team.

Joe
