Probably a rear wheel bearing, very common. Make sure your mechanic repacks the new bearing in high temp grease and does the install correctly....or you'll be doomed to repeat failures.

My advice; if you own a Subaru then buy a Hub Tamer... if you own two Subarus then double the urgency.
I love AWD cars... always have... but boy, do they ever chow down on wheel bearings. This isn't unique to the SVX either... a lot of AWD cars seem to suffer from this problem. Figure my most recent wheel bearing replacement cost me way more than $500, mostly because I was buying tools as well as parts... but you know what? The more I fix the problems, the more that investment pays off. |

I feel lucky. I have access to a very nice press and doing the bearings was quite easy. Just finding the time is what sucks.

my rear right(passenger)
I hear a squak out of my svx especially when I make a hard left and the weight is distributed to the rear right. The Subaru dealer said it isnt the bearing but maybe that is because he fixed it 2 months ago and just doesnt want to pay for tyhe rework. Our dealership here in Columbus sucks.

Hatfield, yeah! That's where I bought my '93. Sorry to hear they have a bad rep.

Snickers, where you from?
I see Illinois but why did you buy from Hatfield? Just curious.

It was the best Svx I could find at the time. These days if you want a good example of the finest engineering and workmanship of Fuji Heavy you ought to do at least a regional if not a national search. After all, how many are left? Accidents, attrition, ignorance and a lack of appreciation contribute to a rapid decline in the available rolling stock. Every time I drive my treasure I feel priviledged and guilty. Guilty to use up something akin to art, priviledged to experience the caress of near perfection. Columbus had his voyage of discovery, I had mine. It was nice to visit your town.

I too have a sound in the right rear of my car. It usually only happens when I hit bumps or take a left turn in my car, and only when theres more than 1 person in the car, especially people in the back. Its a series of high pitched squeaks that go away when the cornering or the bumps stop. So its not a constant sound. My first stab at the problem is that my non-stock wheels appear to push my tires out a bit more than the stocks wheels and being that my svx is a 1992, I figuring the springs in the back to be a bit worn and the tires rub under the weight of a corner or a bump. But reading all this stuff about the wheel bearings makes me wonder. Could this be a wheel bearing issue?
I was considering purchase of the Koni adjustable inserts and hopefully getting my rear to ride a bit higher or have the springs be tighter or whatever. I also wouldnt mind getting the koni's just because they are cool, but this would be a good excuse considering my tight budget. I appreciate any help on this problem. Oh and if anyone knows a good mechanic (preferrably non-dealer been burned too many times with dealers) in the Richmond, VA or surrounding area that has had SVX experiences that they would reccommend. (Sometimes I wish I was in Washington State, that would make repairs a lot easier). Thanks, Tim |
