New rotors/pads Raceconcepts

I installed the new front rotors and pads from Raceconcepts last night. I thought you may want to know what I learned.

I used the old pad shims with the new "Metal Master" PRB (PBR?) (per Wood same as AXXIS) pads. It was a tight fit but I got them in.

The rotors are zinc coated.

I proceeded to follow the break-in procedure. Light to moderate braking from 30mph, 10 times, 30 seconds between. Very interesting as the front end felt like warpped rotors until everything seated in. Also I could smell the pad material.

Then I did some harder stops from 60 and checked the brakes. Them pads were smoking. (Smoke follows me everywhere these days.) I was concerned that maybe there wasn't enough room for the shims and the pads were dragging. I drove at 60 and used the hand brake to stop and the pads were fine. So I drove around some more and repeated a few hard stops from 60 and no smoking pads. So it looks like everything just had to wear in a liitle bit.

The zinc coating on the disk is not completely worn off.

I put my raceconcepts rotors on just before leaving for the 10th anniv meet. I drove all the way there and there were still some patches of zinc left on the braking surface. Give it a thousand miles or so and it'll be all gone.

Ok so I wasn't alone on the warping thing. When I first put the rotors and pads on 007's car they felt like they were warped, but after a few hard stops it went away. Why is this?

The pads and the rotors have to break in. The contact surface of the pad and the rotor will not be uniform. After a few, 10 stops from 30 mph the rotors and pads break in. Then harder stops can be made. The break-in procedure was in the pad box for the pads. It did not mention the rotor. The rotors are coated with zinc. The coeficent of friction for zinc and steel will be different. The zinc coating is not going to be uiform on the cast iron rotors.
Part of the zinc will wear off faster. This makes a jerking motion as the brake pads grab and then slide. After the zinc wears down the stopping becomes more uniform and harder stops will be smoother. It's a good idea to break-in new pads and rotors, also replacement ones.

that's correct. the surface of the rotors isn't uniform because of the zinc coating. That's why there is that break in procedure of the 10 30mph stops.

Wondering if it will be cheaper to just buy the ART rotors or get the Raceconcepts and have them Cryo-frozen at 300below.com.... What do ya think Mike??

I dont even think there is a need to cryo-treat them if you get the race conepts. I have had mine for about 25,000 miles and I'm pretty hard on them. No warpage or cracking at all. Unless you're going to be doing a lot of heavy track stuff, I dont think you need to do the cryo stuff.

When we took Ron Mummerts car for the break-in ride after installing his slotted rotors we noticed a vibration like you are discussing. To me, it really feels like the edges of the pads catching a little on the sharp edges of the rotor slots. After a little wear from the brake pads, I think the sharp edges get rounded off and everything works smoothly.

That's just my theory...
