OMG smoking!!

i got home today and my car was smoking VERY badly
like pouring out of the engine bay
it's leaking oil like crazy from somewhere and dripping all over the exhaust makin it smoke alot.

tomarrow i'll jack up the car and have a look to see where it's leaking
i'm hoping it's just the crank seal failing and not something worse..

What color is the oil? That happened to me, and it was PS fluid. Check your hoses, both pressure and return. It sounds like someting that started all at once - like a hose or something. Good luck and I hope it is something simple.

i wonder how long it's been like that
and if it's been that way for a while i wonder why the car just now sprayed oil all over

It has to be for the front diff. the center diff is part of the transmission, and uses the same ATF as the rest of the tranny.

Are you sure about it using ATF? I changed the fluid in both diffs a couple of years ago, and I seem to remember that they both used gear fluid. Also, I would double check that the PS hoses aren't leaking.

Mike wasn't saying that the front or rear diffs used ATF. They both use the same smelly gear oil. He was referring to the transfer assembly as the 'center diff' and that uses ATF for operation and lubrication.

um........they use gear oil. 80W-90W (front) and 75W-90W (rear), depending on your temperature extremes, per the owners manual. i don't know what would happen if ATF is in there, but i don't want to find out!

treat it to some nice Mobil 1!

Well if we want to get technical, there isn't a center diff.
