Question What the Hell it that???

As I was wandering the Network lockers I found a picture that freeked me out:
http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/files/Seraph/2383.jpg

I saw a drum brake inside the disk rotor at the rear of an SVX.
What the hell is that for? Parking brake I hope?

No wonder the rotors warp.
Tell me the front isn't the same?

Yes, it is the parking brake. It is a very good system.
No the front is not the same.

The rotor wrapped because the moron that installed the bearings did not press the locking nut back properly, thus causing the wheel to come out slowly. That took a while to fix as in I ended up getting a new SVX on that trip (Yay Reading III). Doug Mohr can tell you the excitment we had on that trip and how we took the wheel out just to find out that the whole wheel is kept in by a calliper brace. Kind of scary.

On long trips you would need a few extra brake pads?

Really?
Am i going to have to replace mine on a 3000 mile trip?

I'd like to think I should be able to make it home???
Are we talking the parking brake shoes, or normal disk pad?

The rear brakes on the SVX use a "drum in disc" system. The p-brake uses shoes while the disc uses pads. No, you shouldn't have to replace pads for tens of thousands of miles (depending on your braking habits and weather conditions). The shoes, on your e-brake will last a long, long, long, long time.

As Lwin explained, the problem in those photos was due to "tech error."

I was doing the rear brakes on my Legacy (now deceased) a few months ago. The rotors had been vibrating so I decided that it was time to replace them. When I took one off, I suddenly got confused and thought I got ripped off by having drum brakes in the back instead of disks. It took me a few seconds to realize that I had both, disks and drums.

So, you say, your discs were getting floppy?

That's all most as good as Doug's "Disk drive failure".
