Strut test off car

Question for those who have experience with the struts in the SVX...I have the front strut out of our 97 due to noise that we thought was upper strut bearing/mount. However, when collapsing and extending strut without spring, there are times when the shaft will free travel for 1/2" or so...is this the source of the popping noise?
The upper mounts seem fine...

I'd be curious to hear the answer as well. I have a fair amount of noise coming from the struts area and just ordered new strut mounts and all rubber pieces. I hope the struts are doing ok though!

Is it a clunk/knocking sound over bumps? I had something similar in mine that vanished when I installed my coilovers. Since I had no intention of keeping my stock suspension and it was pretty rough I just tossed it without doing any autopsy work, but obviously they were the cause of my clunk.

I will say that I've never seen a strut or shock with a "dead zone".

It is a clunk, popping sound when going over washboard surfaces. I am now sure the valve inside the strut is the root cause of the noise, in that the upper mounts are good.I have ordered new stock struts from Liberty. I have had the same sounds emanate from our 2 92s, but had replaced everything at once without an autopsy, and just assumed it was the strut mount bearing assembly making that noise.

Are you going to reading? If so, I would like you to be one of the people to drive in my car as I think I may have the same noise as you.
