Most "premium" filters, fluids and whatnot are precision engineered to lighten your wallet.
For normal driving, any plain old oil filter, changed regularly, will do just fine. dcb |

I just simply prefer to use the oil filter that was designed for our cars. It's a little pet peeve that I have. I'm not trying to say that anyone else should use it. It's just my thing.

I worked at a Subaru dealership and the only filter I ever used for my SVX was the SOA5165109 when did they change?

Same here. I worked at a Subaru dealership, and was only familiar with the 109. When I went to get the filter the other day, I was handed the 031, which the counter lady explained superseded the 109.

I do this too for all my Subarus. I have even been known to buy them off ebay when someone splits a case b/c they sold their subaru and has some filters left over.

The SuperTECH ST3593A oil filters from WallyWorld are typically under $3.00 each: I've used them for years and years with nary a problem, often for what I consider to be an "extended OCI" (like 7.5K miles)...
Construction seems to be 1st class and comperable to the various name-brand's "PREMIUM" filter$. Just a suggestion IMHO. Cheers!

Yeah they changed from the 109 awhile back, now they are black instead of white. I always use a genuine subaru filter. At the dealer we've got a cutaway that shows the fram and one of our toyota filters, and there is a major difference. I don't like the filters and the others that have a flat gasket on them, they seem to be more likely to leak than the ones with the gasket that is more like an o-ring. The cheaper filters don't even have a bypass.
Oh, and don't go 7500 miles between oil changes, no matter what oil/filter you're using. 5,000 should be your max, especially on an older engine. Trust.

Oil filters are designed to be somewhat universal, to help oil filter manufacturers.
My '05 Legacy GT 2.5 Turbo uses the same, and I mean EXACTLY THE SAME oil filter part number as my wife's 99 Miata 1.8 liter NA, and also exactly the same as my 1989 (as in the eighties) Honda Hawk GT 647cc motorcycle V-twin engine with common engine and gearbox oiling. And I also found out that the fitment for the ~2005 V6 Honda Odyssey minivan uses the same pattern filter (diameter, seal diameter, thread pitch, etc...) that is merely 10 millimeters longer in the casing and filtering element. With larger filter area, and the same pressure, the filter holds a bit more volume, but also flows more volume of oil. Especially in the turbocharged engine, not starving the engine for oil volume is a good thing, and a few ounces more oil in the system, and the same dipstick reading, isn't a harm. The other thing mentioned is cooling... that depends. On the EJ25 turbo, the headers wrap around the oil filter location, and the longer filter actually gets slightly closer, but still behind a heat shield. And with the plastic undertray in place, I am not sure how much airflow it actually gets. All in all the net change is probably little in terms of cooling. IF the 944 oil filter is the same pattern except for the length, it could flow a little better, and maintain volume. I have considered the steel woven permanent, re-useable oil filters, but haven't justified dropping the cash on one... the marketing says it has a finer particulate filter, and the whole filter is threaded and o-ringed to be dissasembled, cleaned with parts cleaner solution, or even soapy water (and then thoroughly dried before re-use), and then it goes back on the car. It also has an aluminum outer casing, with cooling fins like a heat sync, if it is mounted in an airflow location. But thinking that Subaru designed the oil filter specifically from scratch, for that engine, is almost certainly not true. It is probably similar to many other fitments, for all sorts of different engines. Oil sump volume and windage control, gallery layout, and pump pressure and volume output, and oil cooler systems are probably much more specific to the engine's needs than a largely standardized filter. Filter quality of construction probably has more bearing on whether the filter is a good choice than whether or not it has a bit more barrel length. Oil acidity, fuel contamination, and additive chemical break-down probably dictate oil change interval more than a clogged filter element due to debris in the oil.
