Dash Button internals (cruse/fogs)
Apologies if there is already a thread on this topic, but after a quick search i can see noone was as adventurous as me
(DISCLAIMER! i have a JDM unit, my buttons are on the right side of the steering wheel, and are ordered blank/cruise/fog) so after managing to pry the unit from the dash, and pop the buttons off i took off the first tiny bulbs (green text illumination) because they stuck up, and it was obvious that they would be in the way if i tried sliding the black casing off of the gray interior board. after those were out, i undid the clips, and started sliding the cover off turns out the other set of bulbs (orange active markers) is in the way of the internal guts (which, not surprisingly, are spring loaded) this caused a 'hitch' in the sliding, causing everything effectively to explode in my hands, with all the guts ending up all over the floor. huzzah! this is what the interior board looks like the top the bottom the guts thats basically what the 'button' mechanism looks like. the little black piece on the right is the guide which fits into the bottom of the black housing, and is "connected" to the button unit via this little wire on its underside (not pictured) when i put it back, i was surprised such a ridiculous looking system actually worked the way it did the brass pieces are the connectors which slide along the gray board to give desired effects (or so i presume) anyways, i believe i managed to find and piece everything back together (took a while, no word of a lie...) and while i managed to break/burn out? one of the little bulbs, and lose the little yellow 'condom' for one of the orange ones... (that **** comes off? SERIOUSLY?) i did manage to piece the unit back together, and have the buttons click in/out, and the little bulbs light up at the proper times HOWEVER. my fog lights are not coming on neither is the CRUISE light in the dash but the litthe click noise when enabling cruise is still present. sadly i cant do the obvious test to see if its really working or not here is a numbered/flipped pair of the gray panel pictures i only managed to recover 3 brass connectors, and i extrapolated their placement by the grease/wear marks 2 on the cruse, and one on the right side of the fog switch. now its possible that i missed one, because the pair of connectors on the gray board have slight wear lines (7, 8) which could indicate that i missed one connector, and this is why the fogs arent lighting up? and why is the cruse light in the dash not flipping on? any expert thoughts on the subject? |

Re: Dash Button internals (cruse/fogs)
What were you trying to do in the first place. Why did you go through all of that. I don't see what you ended up doing except messing everything up.

Re: Dash Button internals (cruse/fogs)
if you do a search, I believe his is trying to make daytime runninglights w/o adding anything to the car...I dont know why he went this far into that switch (I didnt even know you could break it down that far).

Re: Dash Button internals (cruse/fogs)
Well, we found out you can if you really want to.
I hope you can find out why it is not working properly and do what you want to do. There is a thread on daytime running lights and how to do that.

Re: Dash Button internals (cruse/fogs)
i've found the "relevant" information on DRLs and such, there is more than one solution to that issue
however, none of them satisfied me. i was looking for the most elegant solution. I believe (perhaps foolishly) that im on the right track to one. This is just a snag in the ongoing process. We'll see how it turns out when the work continues. I was just wondering on the offchance on this entire site of SVX owners, there was a gearhead/techie or two that could offer up some insight, regardless having gone through the same process or not. Re: Dash Button internals (cruse/fogs)
I've taken apart those switches before, but I didn't take them apart that far. I always just tried to put them back the same way I took them out.

Re: Dash Button internals (cruse/fogs)
Turning fog lights into running lights...
If this is what you want to do, please disconnect the battery first before the project starts !! (second doesn't work) It is imperative that you do only the o the correct wires. If you are trying to make running lights out of the fog lights, you can "simply" ...disconnect the "always hot" power supply that is that goes to the fog light relay and jump the power supply that goes to the head light relay that is on only when the ignition switch is is in the run position to the fog light relay... and ground one of the wires that goes to the fog light push button switch itself. On the fog light push button switch, only one wire can be grounded to give you the option of still having a functional fog light switch... grounding the other wire (instead) will cause the the fog lights to come on any time the car is started and running. If you can't work it out, pm me. That is the way I wanted mine to be... On all the time I am driving the car without turning the head light switch on and off all the time! I just grounded the #3 terminal on the fog light relay. Keith Last edited by kwren; 03-21-2009 at 06:48 PM. |

Re: Dash Button internals (cruse/fogs)
I just ripped my switch apart in much the same way as you did while modifying it for my power mode button. It is very easy for those little contacts to fall out of the buttons or get bent while reassembling the switch - maybe this is what happened, and they are either out of position or bent in a way that they no longer make contact? Or you lost one, or put them back in improperly?
My switch looks different than yours though - mine doesn't have that little diode thing in the center.

Re: Dash Button internals (cruse/fogs)
yeah, i was just down there and i think i've got most of it figured out
it would APPEAR, that i've lost one of those copper arms that hook into the buttons i found 3, and i placed 2 in the cruse button, operating 2-3 and 4-5 then i placed the other one in the fog button, which operated 9-10 at that point, the light denoting the functionality of the cruse light (the LED that lights up the button) was working, but the lights worked then i switched the arm to 7-8, and the fog lights worked, but the LED did not. leading me to conclude i lost the dealie, and i will likely have to look real hard/fashion a new one out of some pennies and the cruise button in the dash is off, because it blew. likely because i did not unplug the battery (thank you kwren) haha i think rather than cutting and juxtaposing wires as you've suggested, i could just (semi)permanently connect 7-8, and that will have the same effect as if the button was always pressed down, right? PS: I dont have any DRLs to speak of at the moment, so swapping the headlight/fog light wire wouldnt do much. i only NEED DRLs to pass the ridiculous government inspection, so i can register and finally start driving this thing Last edited by Alcyone; 03-21-2009 at 05:04 PM. |

Re: Dash Button internals (cruse/fogs)
so yeah, i got a small piece of copper, and taped it to the connectors 7+8 with a slightly larger piece of duct tape
now the fogs are always on, the button activity light comes on/off, but doesnt effect operation im sufficiently pleased with the elegance and reversibility of the solution. not to mention the cost. |
