i love trevor's idea with the driver selectable shift firmness
can it be taken one step further?

what i'm wondering is, can the shift firmness selection be linked to the TPS?
that way, with quick or large throttle openings, the shifting is quick and firm
but with small and slow throttle openings it's softer too......

just a thought.......

I got a friend at the local Subaru dealership to get me some data sheets. I sat down with one of the hardware designers at my company and we started to go over some ideas for a trans mod. Tell me what you guys think. The STI has a rotary selector for front rear bias adjustment of the diff. What I was thinking is the same concept, with a similar 4 position switch.

Position 1= stock configuration

Position 2= Bypass trans resister for firm shift (or bypass to a 45ohm resister?)

Position 3= Firm shift+50/50 diff split

Position 4= Firm shift+50/50 split+Power Mode

This weekend when a solder table is free, I will try to get one made up.

Does any one have an extra TCU they would want to donate, or sell cheap? Also I would like to make a "T harness" for the TCU but cant seem to source the male or female connector. Anyone know how to get a hold of them?

Doesn't someone sell a "shift kit" that does just this?

Also, I've had no issues w/ the aftermarket replacement resistor since I did it back in Nov '05. In fact, I pretty much even forgot that I had replaced it!

u may be right re: shift kit
but i think the kit may simply provide for adjustability to where u want it...

but i was thinking of continuously variable setup that reacts with the throttle openings as you drive.....

but upnorth362's idea rocks!!

From my calculations, with 20ohm resistance there should be no more than 15watts passing through the circuit at 14.4volts. varying temps will of course vary these measurements.
I would be interested to learn how you estimated the current in the circuit. Refer my lengthy explanation of the principle involved.

The OEM resistor does in fact become overly hot, to a degree which I would rate as unacceptable and which as a result causes failures. Unfortunately the OEM component is not designed, so as properly to take advantage of the steel enclosure as a heat sink.

The heat generated in a wire wound resistor is directly related to the length of the resistance wire incorporated and therefore also to physical size. More wire of a lower resistance per foot, provides a higher capacity in watts.
