What is going on now?

So after putting in a new alternator, changing just about all the fluids and worrying about the serpentine belt for a few days my 92 SVX seemed to be running much better. For about a week. Then it began its new problem. Low idling at stops to the point that it has actually stopped a few times and required a restart. Possibly related is a decrease in power and what seems like very irregular downshifting associated with increased engine noise and virbation.

Is this the transmission going or something else like a sensor or belt or ICU? I can't seem to find a mechanic who wants to do anything but point at the most expensive engine part and say it needs immediete replacement. Anyone know what might be going on?

Your throttle might just be set too low...that could make it die, but you need to give more details about the vibrating...does it do it all the time or only at certain speeds or only while braking ?etc etc

I'd say it vibrates most when I'm just cruising and not giving it much gas. Like it's starved for gas.

The more bumpy vibration under braking might just be my brakes or something like that.

Vibarating while braking is pretty normal. Mine does it too and so it my first SVX. There actually is another thread about it and I don't think anyone has yet come up with a solution to that problem. As far as the car seeming like its starved for gas it could be a fuel pump. I've never had a fuel pump go out on any car I've ever owned though so I'm not sure if that would cause vibrating...it would be more like a hesitation actually. I recommend starting your car and popping the hood...remove the plastic cover on the engine and move the throttle to give it some gas. If your engine looks like its bouncing around you have bad motor mounts...this can cause vibrating. I had mine mounts replaced...I forgot how much it was, but its nothing scary maybe a few hundred bucks. If I get a chance I'll take a picture of my motor mounts so you can even look under the car and see if they're bad.

Have you tried cleaning the MAF?

The question as submitted is sufficiently broad, vague and obtuse to the point that anything is a viable option.

Big sign that the MAF might be dirty or going bad. But what do I know.

Mass Air Flow Meter. Its the sensor right after the airbox. Disconnect it from the air box and spray it with some MAF Cleaner or Brake Cleaner.
