Removing Stereo in Forester 2003

I have a Subaru Forester 2003.
I'm trying to replace the stereo in Forester 2003. I found all sorts of manuals online, but none for Forrester. I'm having problems getting the center trim out...
Question 1: How do I get the center plastic trim out? It popped out OK. But it appears that there some cables holding it back. It only comes out to about 1-2 inches. I'm afraid to pull on it, and I cannot get around to see what's holding it. ( On my Forester, HVAC controls appear to be attached to the center trip. All the manuals illustrate that these controls stay in place, they don't come out, but in the Forester, they appear to be one piece w/center trim...)

In case you're still working on this (or for anyone else who comes along later)...

Have you seen this?

2003 Forester CD Changer installation guide (PDF file on SubaruParts.com. Shows how to open the dash and remove the factory radio).

This thread I put together on NASIOC may be helpful, too:

Stock head unit information -- pin-outs, subwoofer, aux inputs, and more

And, of course, there's always www.subaruforester.com
