2002 Impreza MT compatibility

Any of you used a late model manual Impreza Tranny in your SVX. I have the opportunity to buy everything from a 2002 but I'm just concerned about compatibility. Any thoughts much appreciated !

It'll work. The Subaru '90+ MT's will all bolt up to the SVX. Some earlier ones might as well...

It fits

I'm sporting the following donor parts - all from a 2002 WRX
- 5 speed tranny
- shift linkage (albeit lengthened)
- leather shift knob
- pedal assembly
- steering wheel

I almost used the WRX crank pulley to replace my stock SVX one (to eliminate the chance of the old one seperating) but went with an aluminum one from Dayle.

Thanks gsodonis!

Not very familiar with Rear ends so can someone explain why I can't just use the Drive shaft and complete rear end from the donor Impreza? I know the SVX has a limited Slip but is that the only reason why everyone swaps the gears out? Why not just use the entire rear end assembly form the donor?

Thanks

The manual transmissions are about 2" shorter than the automatic transmissions, so when you install a manual transmission, its necessary to either lengthen the SVX driveshaft by 2" or install a driveshaft from another car that is about the correct length. As it turns out the late '90s Legacy Outback driveshaft is about the same length and can be used with minor mods.

"2002 Impreza MT"... There are several different models of Impreza. Which one were you talking about? Its important because for all of the 2002 Impreza trannies except the WRX, its necessary to replace the rear diff too.

Did'nt think to check model

Well, it's either a WRX or RS because it's a sedan. Hard to tell with the hood, trunk, doors, and all glass missing. Anyway, I get all the detail tomorrow morning when I go to pick it up. I belive it is a WRX because, the area where the turbo and intake/intercooler should be, is missing.

If it's a WRX you're saying use the complete rear end from it, correct?

If it's an RS I should use the SVX rear end and put the impreza gears in it?

Either way, I need to either lengthen my SVX DS or use an Outback DS. So the Impreza drive shaft is useless to me? Why not lengthen it to fit the SVX?

If it's a WRX, the SVX rear will work, and you don't need to buy the rear diff...(as I understand they had a 3.54 rear diff too)

If it's a RS, you need the rear diff (if it is a 5 bolt side plate diff) to switch out th ering and pinion.

Gear Ratio table

Thanks Huck! Did a quick search and found this handy table. All Impreza rear end config's (SVX and Legacy included) through 2003.

Final Question: Should I bother with the Impreza Drive shaft. I believe it is one solid piece. Anyone used this to lengthen instead of the SVX DS? I hate to cut up/splice up my SVX component shaft if I don't have to.

The Impreza Driveshaft will be to short....but you might be able to use the tubing from it to lengthen your SVX's front section...

The Stars are aligned !!!

I stopped by the yard with the 2002 Impreza 5mt. It is a WRX WhooHoo. No rear end work. I'll probably grab the drive shaft and anything attached to the trans, including the linkage, shifter, pedal assembly, clutch/slave cylinders, etc.

Am I missing anything? Should I expect any surprises getting it out?

I can see why. That pedal assembly looks like a pain. I went ahead and got the gas pedal assembly as well. I'll keep you guys posted on my progress.

Thanks for all the advice so far. Happy Turkey Day !!
