@!&#$ing tranny blew!!! What do i do???

Hi,
Well, long story short, i replaced the tranny fluid on saturday (not a flush, just the drain) and not 15min after I start driving it again... SLIPPING!!! and wining noises, now car will not move unless I leave it sit for a bit.

The tranny has been wining a bit lately, just a small wine (like gears spinning really fast), so I decided to change the fluids. The fluid that came out was quite brown. But Dexron 3 max life atf in. I think it started slipping because it didn't have enough fluid in it, I checked the stick before I started driving and said it was full. Well checked it again after it started @#@!ing up and it barely registered.

Put more in, then it fried. Left it over night, came back this morning, levels were high, a bit over cold F. Car was working alright for a bit then, 1mi down the road, SLIPPING!!! So after a process of stopping for a bit then going again, I made it to the bottom of the hitt i live on. Won't go up it!

What is this and what should I do?

This car has been an endless pit of money for me. OVER

Unhappy Sorry to say....

but it sounds like the trans is toast.

Replacement or repair is your only option to keep it going.

My thoughts as well. Honestly, if you're going to repair the car, you might want to look into getting a used Legacy or Impreza trans with 4.11 or 4.44 gears. I've seen used ones for sale on Ebay for a couple hundred bucks - plus your local junkyard will have a ton of them as they're very common. Get a matching rear diff and you could have your car back on the road again for far less than a remanufactured SVX trans (~$2,500) or a completely new one (~$4,000).

Good luck!

If this is an obstacle in the path of your future, by all means sell it.

You say that it'll drive a mile or so before it starts slipping? It sounds like the same problem I had with mine a couple years ago. I had it towed to a Subaru dealership who did a flush and replaced the internal screen. Apparently there was a blockage somewhere, so the pressure was dropping off very quickly until it couldn't shift or hold a gear any more. After the flush it ran perfecly...

...for about a week, whereupon it died permanently and I had to replace the tranny...

The tranny had 133k on it, so I guess you could say it was time. I mean, I don't think 133k is stellar for a tranny, but definitely above average for an SVX without a cooler on it.

I think it was probably worn substantially, and the slipping burned the clutch out for good.

There's a lesson to be learned there - slipping is bad. Sometimes they start slipping for reasons other than a worn clutch - brake band needs adjustment, blockage in he fluid passages. But if you let it slip a lot, you're going to ruin the clutch anyway.

Of course, if it's slipping because of a blocked fluid passage, the debris causing the blockage is likely clutch material, and it had to come from somewhere, you know?

Anyway, maybe you can get away with a flush for now and maybe you can't. Either way I think you're in for a new tranny very shortly. Sorry.

yeah, I dropped it off at my mechanics today and he is going to let me know whats up, other than it doesn't work. I doubt I will be fixing it, dont have $$$ to spare for that without completely ruining my plans for the future (moving to New Zealand).

Well, it is after all a complicated 12-year-old car. It's not a Camry.
