Proper SVX oil filter?

I treated myself to a drive in the SVX today, and headed for the local Subie dealership to pick up an oil filter and drain plug gasket. Keep in mind that I've been SVXless for nearly 3 years, and this is my first experience with buying an oil filter within that time frame.

"An SVX oil filter, please.", I say.

What's given to me is not the 109 filter i expected. It's black and appears to actually be made in Japan.

Was I given the right filter? Are the 109s no longer produced?

Help me out here!

Mike

People seem to like the porsche 944 oil filters by Purolator. They're much bigger and are supposed to cool/filter the oil better.

Thats correct. Go to svxfiles locker HERE to see more comparisons and benefits.

The same stock filter is used on many 750cc Honda motorcycles. A 750cc oil filter to protect a 3300cc engine? I don't feel too comfortable about that.

Re: Proper SVX oil filter?

I just simply prefer to use the oil filter that was designed for our cars. It's a little pet peeve that I have. I'm not trying to say that anyone else should use it. It's just my thing.

Re: Proper SVX oil filter?

I worked at a Subaru dealership and the only filter I ever used for my SVX was the SOA5165109 when did they change?

Same here. I worked at a Subaru dealership, and was only familiar with the 109. When I went to get the filter the other day, I was handed the 031, which the counter lady explained superseded the 109.

I do this too for all my Subarus. I have even been known to buy them off ebay when someone splits a case b/c they sold their subaru and has some filters left over.

Lightbulb Re: Proper SVX oil filter?

The SuperTECH ST3593A oil filters from WallyWorld are typically under $3.00 each: I've used them for years and years with nary a problem, often for what I consider to be an "extended OCI" (like 7.5K miles)...

Construction seems to be 1st class and comperable to the various name-brand's "PREMIUM" filter$.

Just a suggestion IMHO.

Cheers!

Re: Proper SVX oil filter?

It sounds correct - looking through the catalog at the local auto parts store my '94 SVX has the same filter as my '93 Legacy. I bought OEM oil filters for the Legacy and they are black Nippon filters...

Re: Proper SVX oil filter?

I usually use the Purolator 30165 myself, as its a big larger than stock. I remember seeing the OE filters in white some time ago if I remember correct, and lately they are black.

Incorrect. The legacy uses a different oil filter. They are physically identical on the outside, but have a different part number. The SVX filter has a larger filtration surface.

I don't want to know what people think about Porsche whatever or any of that nonsense. I just simply want to know what the correct SUBARU part number is for an *SVX* oil filter. I suppose I wasn't clear enough in my original post.

wouldnt the SUBARU dealership that you went to, be able to tell you the correct SUBARU part number?
