Rotating Tires
I'm needing to rotate my tires. I figure I'll just switch fronts and backs first. Next time I do it, they're gonna need to switch sides. Aside from looking a little goofy, is there any serious implication to having wheels on the wrong side for about 4000 miles?

if you just need to rotate your tires, can't you roll it forward (or back) a couple of feet?
sorry couldn't help myself - no constructive advice available. |

I think the main thing with the spoke design is the ventilation on the rotors and pads. You might want to keep them how they are since they are meant to turn in one direction only.
I make it a point to make sure they go the right way. You don't know how many people I have argued with and they have the guts to tell me that I had them the wrong way initially. L

As Lwin says, the spokes are designed [backways in my opinion] to promote airflow over the rotors in the interests of cooling. If you are a heavy brake user, you run the risk of warping the rotors. If you really, really want to rotate, you could take the tyres off the rims and shift them over to the other side, leaving the rims on right and left as they should be. Don't believe in this myself, I like to keep the better pair on the front all the time for braking and anti-aquaplaning reasons. The owner's manual recommends switching from front to back on the same side only BTW Joe

The rims on my car are stamped "L" for those on the left side, and no stamp on the right side ones.
I assume that the rims are specifically made for each side of the car and should not be interchanged. When I recently rotated my tires, the rims stayed on the appropriate side, but I de-rimed the tires and reversed them so they would rotate to opposite car sides. Hope this helps. |

Rotating
The tires are only supposed to be rotated front to back and vice versa on the same side. I remember someone saying that it had something to do with messing up the AWD. The wheels might cool off the brakes more when facing properly (has this been tested?), but I don't think putting them on backwards would have any major influences (besides cosmetic).

Most of us use assymetrical tires (the chevron grooveson the top of the tire point toward the front of the car). The SVXwheels are also assymetrical. If you have this combination, rotate only back to front. DO NOT ROTATE side to side or criss cross.

Re: Rotating

This rotation is typical of all cars, not just AWD. The criss-cross rotation was developed before steel belts. Prior to steel, tires used rayon (or other fibers), which, as you would suspect, had alot more "give." they were more "jelly-like," sidewalls had more flex, shape-shifting was more typical, so, it was necessary to take them "round the horn" so to speak. With steel belted radials, this "round the horn" rotation became unnecessary, because the construction, reinforced by the steel fibers, added rigidity. This explanation is oversimplified, but, bottom line: front to back, back to front is the only rotation pattern needed.

Front to back
Front to back and vice versa is my view, particularly if it means getting a better pair on the front.
The recommendation is generic for asymmetric tyres, but I use symmetrics on mine, they are very quiet. Still I would hold with the front to back on one side method, it keeps the tyres the same rolling radius, important for keeping down un-necessary work at the differentials. Joe
