Re: Which Outback should I buy

I bought the 06 Outback LL BEAN 3.0R with 42k miles, picked it up yesterday. Runs and drives great, just a couple scratches, no dings at all.

Re: Which Outback should I buy

You made the right decision. The timing chain noise is nowhere near as bad as the piston slap noise that the 2.5s develop as they age. The 3.0 is the way to go with these cars. Not only are they more reliable, but the fuel mileage is similar, and they are a much more smooth engine by comparison. It completely changes the feel of the car. The 3.0 makes it feel like a much more premium vehicle.

Thanks for compliments and thumbs up guys. Im glad i made the right choice. I always liked the 3.0 engine better than the 2.5

Re: Which Outback should I buy

Agree on the piston "slap", it's annoying. Our 2000 Legacy had it when cold. Subaru will put put skirted pistons in to "cure" it, but as long as I knew what it was I figured I could live with it.

Congratulations on the purchase. I always liked that body style in white, almost bought one myself.

1992 SVXs—combined average MPG 2005-2013: 21.19
2008 Outback 2.5/4 speed EAT—average MPG June-August 2013: 23.40

I'd guess the 3.0 probably returns numbers similar to the SVX and say it's definitely worth considering giving up a couple of miles per gallon in return for a bit more power and refinement.

Re: Which Outback should I buy

I have been told the negative is that they are harder and thus more costly to service because everything in the bay is tighter, but as SVX owners we should be used to that.

My 2012 Outback 3.6 Limited is a fabulous ride. Anyone agree that the Outback & Tribeca share the same body & frame?

Re: Which Outback should I buy

But those 928's are so reliable that you should not even need to open the hood on one of those....said no one ever!
