Rotor Replacement

What steps are required to remove the front and rear rotors. I replaced the pads today but still don't like how the car stops. I couldn't tell for sure how the rotors are held in place.

Re: Rotor Replacement

Take the front calipers off and the rotors will fall off.
back requires a little more because of the emergency brake, but when you look you will see! Is pretty much self explanatory.
Good luck...

Re: Rotor Replacement

I would hang the caliper with a big plastic tie.

I use a straightened out coathanger that hangs in the garage. Works wonders

Re: Rotor Replacement

Fronts won't fall off if they're factory I don't think. I thought all Subarus from factory had that PITA screw holding 'em in which you can simply throw away as I've yet to see a set of aftermarket ones with the screw hold. If your rotors are just glazed and in good shape you can simply turn 'em.

Re: Rotor Replacement

"Just glazed" rotors on our heavy-high-mileage SVX's would be nice!

Re: Rotor Replacement

To remove the rotors you also have to remove the caliper mounting bracket. On the rears I used a rubber mallet to break them loose and then they just pulled straight off.

Re: Rotor Replacement

Sorry for the confusion... I consider the mounting bracket as part of the caliper.

Re: Rotor Replacement

Yeah, the caliper is two big bolts (14-16mm if I recall). Pull that off and the rotor should just be dangling there on the hub. If it's seized on, you can use a mallet if you don't want the rotor anymore, or you can use a bolt that fits in the little screwhole in the front of the rotor in order to push the rotor off the hub.

Re: Rotor Replacement

Thanks.

I didn't see anything holding them on when I looked at them. Where is the PITA screw when there is one?

I guess they are keyed in the back to the wheel hub and the silver cap which covers the hub can just remain in place from what you are saying.

Right?
