Re: 98 FACE LIFT ever existed?

Sorry for the Zombie thread, but I wanted to post these sketches for a possible version of the '98 SVX.

This is how I think a GenII SVX may have looked, along with a marketing synopsis for each.

First the SVX would migrate to the Alcyone nameplate. Being the sales turkey it was, Subaru wouldn't rely on the SVX name to carry the car. Second the Alcyone would split into a 3 model range.

At the bottom, and not pictured would be the base Alcyone. Priced at $20,000-25,000 this would be the "secretaries" car. Powered exclusively by a phaseII EJ25 and 4EAT it would lack the upper eschelon options such as speed sensitive power steering, or auto climate control.

Next up is my favorite, The Alcyone STI. Powered by a 300-350hp forced induction EG36, backed by the same 5speed trans from the JDM WRX. Costing between $30,000-38,000 this car would contain NO power options, and would have a radio delete. It would be rough and wild. This would be the answer to the Skyline GT-R. And likeley would have forced Nissan to bring the R34 to America

Finally the Alcyone SVX. This is the flagship of the line. Powered by an N/A EG36 of 280-300hp. This car would have every option standard. This is the ground based executive jet. Smooth and fast.

Finally Heres how the Alcyone may look today if evolution had been allowed to take its course. Based on the current Legacy platform this is still the full lux car the SVX was meant to be.

These are my miscellaneous ramblings on paper. Hope you enjoy them.

Re: 98 FACE LIFT ever existed?

Crazyhorse, nice effort but:
- The side front angle and the rear angle are from the fast and the furious honda civic.
- The front end is of the Ford contour.

As for the new generation SVX at the bottom of the page, this is a hybrid of both Chrysler and Mercury. Where the heck are our WINDOWz???????

Thanks for the comments Danny. Remember that the STI version would have hit the streets of America before the WRX. In the rest of the world it would share the stage with it. Just like thw WRX it would be WAY over the top in the styling, and performance.
I was after the genII Legacy for inspiration on the front/rear treatments.

As for the new one, I think the world has moved on from our cool windowz!

Re: 98 FACE LIFT ever existed?

Thanks for sharing your sketches, and sharing your best guess about what might have been
This is certainly something many of us have thought about.

I do believe the 'freshened' appearance of the car-show car is exactly where Subaru was heading, the front wrap around bumper pictured. I wish someone had a rear pic of that car. The main cabin was definately left intact. Certainly, a displacement increase to 3.5/3.6 was in order, based on SVX engine internals and 2.5L production specs.

The SVX was ahead of the times. Since the SVX was never superceded, the SVX remained an eternal design. The fact that a magazine such as Classic Motorsports March 2010 issue listed the SVX among 21 BEST EVER TIMELESS DESIGNS demonstrates that reality,
IMHO

I agree, it looks like a white, not a pearl white, which could mean that it was in fact 98 makeover , the 'Rocky Mountain' white a new color for the freshened car. Does anyone recognize the location?

Crazyhorse, sorry for being harsh in my reply before maybe I have gone too far. As Ron mentioned, thank you for your enthusiasm in sharing the sketches with us, probably because they are still rough sketches, I saw the resemblance with other cars.

I would see the next generation SVX somehow inspired from ours. I do not mind a little more air drag, something in between your sketches and our cars.

And the reason it is called Alcyone is because it resembles to nothing on the roads. Indeed its design is ahead of time, especially the rear end/trunk area. You can see Chris Bangle using a similar design on the Z4, 5 and 7 series BMW.

I want the new SVX to keep 90% of the area from the doors till the back end + a different rear bumper design.
I want a shorter nose from the front and different fender/bumper and an advanced headlight lighting with a slightly different design (what you have sketched above).

And... without the windows design, it wouldn't be the Alcyone anymore

Re: 98 FACE LIFT ever existed?

Cool sketches and model synopsis, crazyhorse!

I get it, that you may not necessarily be putting up your dream versions of an SVX update, but what "could have happened" had Subaru continued the model with a 1998 model year refresh.

We all need to step back in our minds to the mid 90's as you have, with what Subaru actually DID produce during that time (both here and JDM), add to the that the trends of competitors at the time, and your ideas really are one realistic possibility. (not that it is what we all would want or not)

And along those same lines, whether any of us would like it or not, if the SVX had continued to evolve over the years, it is a realistic possibility that it could look very much like your last sketch, basically a gussied-up 2010 Legacy GT coupe - the window-in-a-window having disappeared in the last 1 or 2 generations, just like other once-iconic-but-no-longer-hip things like pop-up headlights on a Corvette.

All of course, just one possible line of history in an alternate universe.

As I posted in this thread a few years ago, I still think the 98 SVX was being planned as a more minor update - maybe not as simple as just the new bolt-on bumper on the white car, but something along the lines of the Amadeus. Ignore the station wagon concept and look at the front end of that prototype - it is NOT just a SVX with a wagon slapped on the back. There are more updated (for mid-90's) integrated headlight/side marker assemblies more smoothly molded into new hood, fenders, and front bumper. The rear bumper and tail lights hint at similar treatment.

Re: 98 FACE LIFT ever existed?

And oh yeah, IF they ever did somehow decide to creat a new SVX today (which they won't and I have mixed feelings either way), I agree with Danny on how I would like to see it executed.

But I'm fine where we are at now. The fact our SVXes exist in a single 5 year run as a single generation, and that generation was exectued so well, makes it that much more timeless.

From our old pal, Giorgetto Guigiaro. I wouldn't count them out too soon.

I'd love to see Subaru do another, well done SVX... but I don't have much confidence in them, seeing how they have either botched, or abandoned most of their products for the last few years.

I would, just because there are concepts doesn't mean they'll happen. Look at the lower parts of the window on that. Good luck with it having any usable purpose. Too small to fit anything through at a drive thru, and still way to small to be able to get much fresh air into. Just sayin...

I don't eat in my car, so, any food-related drive-thru is not a problem for me.

Well that hybrid looks OK for pancakes Ron.

Big Mac could be a problem though.

My comment on that autoblog article was largely to the same effect.

The split being too low is fixable, by just moving the cut line up a bit.

But I would like to see a new coupe with W-I-W, though, for the same exact technical reasons that SVX has them. The reasoning is still quite sound.

I prefer frameless windows, but if there has to be window-frames, flush-fit glass with the minimum of seam profile, and compound curvature for aerodynamics, is the way to do it.
