Rear axle Questions??
Ok so im working on a 5 speed swap on my 92 LSL I have every thing done but the rear end the old cv axles will not fit into the new diff but the axles for the new diff are to small for the wheel hubs
I had bought a svx with the 5 speed swap already done but due to poor quality of work it broke the drive shaft and in turn blew the trans as far as i know the old trans was out of a 98 legacy 3.9 ratio the newer trans I purchased is out of a 03 RS with a 4.11 ratio A point in the right direction would help i haven't been able to drive it in over a year its getting frustrating looking at sitting there waiting to be driven |

Re: Rear axle Questions??
The easiest way is to swap in the "new" diff casing your SVX diff carrier (viscous lsd) and use the SVX drive shafts. It's worth replacing the carrier bearings and oil seals while at it.

Re: Rear axle Questions??
Most good axle repair shops can also swap the ends assuming the shaft splines are the same. Failing that, it is possible to split and sleeve weld the two shafts together with proper jigging and temperature control. Downside there is that if the shaft ever goes bad, getting a rebuilt one would be somewhat more complex, as you can't use an off the shelf one.

Quote:
Simply unbolt the LSD carrier from the 3.54 ring gear, bolt on the new ring gear and place it back in the new diff, then bolt the old endcaps onto the new diff, and shim as necessary.

Re: Rear axle Questions??
Ok so I finally got around to swaping out the lsd but there are a couple teeth missing from the side gears and a noticeable crack on the ring gear so that's not going to work
Are custom axles is the only option now? Or is there another way to make this work |

Re: Rear axle Questions??
Locate another SVX LSD. You do not need the 3.54 ring gear - you have to swap this out anyway, but the side gears are important.
Another option is to buy a Quaife Torsen diff for the R160 and cut the small stub off from one of the SVX axles. The Torsen has two sets of grooves for the C-clips and thus can take the SVX axles. This is what I did. Quite expensive, but works great ! /T |

Re: Rear axle Questions??
Ok so was looking at the diff and silly me mistook the spider gears for the side gears (too many beers?)
the spider gears out of the 4.11 seemed to be the same as the svx so i swapped them everything looks ok put the diff back together and Im going to install it into the car this weekend guess we'll find out if it'll work kind of excited only a couple more things to do until its ready to drive |

Re: Rear axle Questions??
Could be an expensive and time consuming mistake if it doesn't work.
