Tire suggestions...
Kay guys... am finally getting new rims and rubber on the SVX. Already know what rims I'm getting, but am having some trouble picking tires. My budget's pretty slim, so I'm down to only a few choices. They are:
Kumho Ecsta AST Hankook Radial K106 Hankook Ventus HRII H405 Falken GR Beta FK-451 Falken Ziex ZE-512 Kumho Ecsta ASX And that's as high as I can go. Basically, I'm trying to decide between the Falken GR Betas and the Kumho Ecsta ASXs. I'm leaning towards Falken... ...but I figured I'd ask the guys who've owned this car a lot longer, and might have some more experience with one or more of the tires I listed. If not, no biggie, I'll probably take the Falkens. Thanks all! |

Hi,
We have been running the falken 512s on 3 cars, 1 the 92 SVX. Got to compare them with Toyo Proxes4 (2 sets), Conti "ECOs" on different SVXs. My take: Toyos NOISY-whine Excellent wear Good overall performance, low price but noise made them unbearable. Contis "ECO" Excellent wear Quiet Best ride Not as good in rain, or handling as the other two brands. Falken Not objectionably noisy, but if you want stealth mode, look elsewhere..much quieter than the Toyos, not silent like the Contis... Best looking. best rain performance (of these wide tire) Nice cushy ride, crisp handling Fast wear of these 3 by far... Cheap1 ~80 each dicount tire direct Putting my money where my mouth is, I plan on ordering a set of Falken 512 225/40/18 when my new rims come in... Gordon

I have the kumho ecsta asx on my dad's svx. We put about 5k on them before we sold it to him and they were a good tire but with a softer sidewall than I think is appropriate for the svx.
They seem to be wearing pretty well so far but with your choices I'd go for the falkens. Their tires are much stiffer in the sidewall.

I don't know the tires you mention but can offer this:
The way the suspension design on the SVX and most other Subaru's works, it's better not to have a tire with a square edge profile. It should be rounded, like the OEM Potenza's ?sp from Bridgestone. The squarer tires work but edge wear soon becomes noticeable. You'll start to wonder if the tires are under inflated. Last edited by SVX_MY_BABY; 03-11-2007 at 12:20 PM. |

Have you looked into the Contiextremes? I have those on a couple of mine and a few others here have them and they seem to be pretty good. Set of 4 are $450 or so on the road.

Check out the Sumitomo HTR+.
Great tire for the price IMHO. Got mine from Tire Rack. Z rated all season tires, $79 for the 225/45-17 size.

i have worked with tires exclusivly for 2 years and i can honestly say that the ASX's are going to be your best bet at that price range... they statisfiy even the pickiest of porshe owners... but dont just take my word for it check out tire rack (www.tirerack.com) they have a awsome review system

Do you know about the Fuzion ZRI. I believe it is an offshoot of bridgestone. They received very good reviews from tire rack drivers. Very consistent. And cheap. Although tire wear was not great. But I never get high miles on my car with tires. I currently have BF Goodrich G-Force sport. Works well, no complaints just don't overinflate or you're car will start shaking at times. Tire rack reviews although can vary greatly from one driver to another can overall show a pattern of driver satisfaction or not. Good Luck.

I have used BFG Sport Contacts, Toyo FZ4s, Bridgestone RE070s, and Toyo RA1s. The first two are nice street tires and last 2 are great autoX tires. The Toyos are nice but get noisy when pushed more than they want, great in the wet and excellent wear.

Thanks everybody. I deal pretty much exclusively with DiscountTireDirect, 'cause their prices are a lot better than Tire Rack (and they have free same-day shipping!). So that's why I listed the ones I did.
I did end up going for the Falkens, but next time around I'll try out the ASXs. |
