Why you should you always have a spare key
20 years of use have taken there toll. This happened when I was 2 hours away, luckily I wasn't in that car.

Re: Why you should you always have a spare key
Can you still read the code stamped on it? Take it to a dealer and get a brand new one cut.

Re: Why you should you always have a spare key
I can still read the code. Is that something they do for no charge? Also will they give the same key style?

Re: Why you should you always have a spare key
I had new keys made from my original ones. I only use the originals to make duplicates.
There is a Subaru key blank with a green LED on the end The part is key blank PT471293. The part number is 57430AA130 and was obtained from Subaruparts.com and cut by my dealer. Cost was $16.12 It LED comes in handy when opening the trunk at night The Subaru logo is the switch. ,

Re: Why you should you always have a spare key
The dealer I go to charges for the key, but cuts it for free. Last time I got one, all they had was metal and theycould order the one that John posted. Nate1986 had a bunch of that exact blank for sale, not sure if he has any left? I think if you take a key to cut, they'd probably want a buck or two?

Re: Why you should you always have a spare key
I was over 300 miles from home when I saw a small rock in my tire tred. I took my key and flicked the rock out and the tip of my key dropped off as well. No spare key. A friend took me to the Subaru Dealership where I showed my registration and my VIN and they cut one while I waited. Got back to the car and all was good again. I don't use my key for anything but the ignition anymore.

Re: Why you should you always have a spare key
The dealership only had the metal ones, so I got one of those just to have but I also ordered the standard one off eBay. It had free shipping so it turned out to be a few dolllars cheaper that Subaruparts.com.
When you place them side by side it is amazing how worn my original keys really were. They don't even look like the same keys. There are sharp ridges on the new one that are completely rounded over and worn smooth on my '92 key.

Re: Why you should you always have a spare key
I had that happen to me once, and I was like 500 miles away from home. A locksmith was able to take both pieces of the key and cut a new one from the remains.

Re: Why you should you always have a spare key
+1 that any decent locksmith should be able to cut a key from the two pieces- I've done it more than once. I'm pretty sure it has to be one of the old-style manual key cutting machines rather than the automatic "cassette" style ones that you find in most home improvement stores.
