end of tranny, end of SVX

Last week the 4EAT gave up completely, horrible iron to iron sounds, shifting like mad

rebuilding is very expensive (3500 Euro excl removal and putting back together, another tranny is available for about 2500 excl) so it is time to say goodbye to the SVX

It has been a lovely car for the past 9 years, luxuriously and relaxed driving, great wintercar

Not sure if I bring it to the junkyard, or sell it in parts (that needs room that I do not have)

This forum has been a great help with great people

Re: end of tranny, end of SVX

That was expensive. Did you check the price for swapping to manual?

I can't imagine Subaru providing a "dangerous" shiftmap.

I didnt use powermode often, if fast accelleration or high speed was wanted I just pressed the pedal and than the power mode comes in automatically (in spite of the button not being in powermode)

I have driven 260,000 kms, we dont have long stretches of straight road here so many shifts and accelerations en decellerations and turns

Manual is just as expensive here, the garagist is already 70 euro per hour

I loved the smoothness of the 4EAT, no thinking about shifting, easy in the many trafficjams

The way power mode works, it should prolong trans life if anything, due to keeping it in a lower gear more of the time. The lower the gear, the less work the trans has to do. (And shorten engine life very slightly due to running it at a little bit higher RPMs more of the time. But the motors are bullet-proof, the trannies are not.)

And he probably didn't do the power mode mod. He thinks you're talking about the power mode turning on when you hit the gas hard.

The only time being in power mode is going to hurt you is in 4th gear on the highway. It stops the torque convertor from locking up.
So if you plan to cruise down the highway for half an hour at 65mph or whatnot, you may to to turn off power mode.
Other than that I leave mine on, its better to be in a lower gear.

Hi Renus,

There is a transmission in the UK that was on on ebay for £299.99 (UK pounds)

It's from a Japanese import so should fit your car being a euro with no problems.

Let me know it you want anymore info and I will send you their details to contact them directly, they are a very big Subaru breakers.

Regards,
Darren.

Sorry, but the JDM VTD tranny is not an easy fit to a EURO VTD car.

Do not go this route unless you absolutely know what you're getting into.

Please note also, that not all SVXs sold in Europe were VTDs so you need verify what kind of transmission you really need (have).

Re: end of tranny, end of SVX

I don't think there's a big difference between transmissions, I think maybe a speed sensor might need to be moved? My Aussie delivered SVX had a japanese transmission from the previous owner. Should be able to be made work with minimal effort. Both had VTD and same final ratio pretty sure Euro final ratio is the same.

Hey man, stop thinking that way! Just buy 4.44 tranny from Outback (~300Euro) and 4.44 rear diff (~150Euro). Spend 1 day in the garage with 2 your friends and beer and have fun with your SVX for next 9 years!

You need to verify what kind of transmission you have... the Outback ACT tranny can not be swapped into a VTD car very easily - EURO or JDM.
