You have done well Tapani, to get all the bits together and working.
The difference between the two AWD is amaizing. No more front wheel spin, no more front diff breakages. No more off throttle understeer. Just grips the road and goes.
It should be able to handle the torque from the turbo off the line a lot better.

Harvey.

Re: Traction project

Thanks Harvey, I appreciate your compliment

And the QC doesn't hurt the larger throttle shifts at all

Other than that the VTD tranny + TCU firmware are all bone stock 1995 JDM for now - I have the modified valve body from Mike on the shelf.....

I think the old 4.444 was on its way out ..... the whole car is totally transformed. This was probably neither the easiest nor the cheapest way forward, but I can recommend the combination for all who want an effortless cruiser with predictable traction.

It's amazing in the city to be able to give full throttle off the line while turning 90 degrees at a corner - no spin - the TBDs work wonders combined with the VTD. With the correct torque converter I can actually feel the turbo spool too. Also, as a daily driver the 3.7 gearing compliments the low and mid range characteristics of the LP turbo engine much better than the 4.444.

A few loose ends to tie, I will let you know how everything goes after I get more miles under my belt.

You have a treat waiting, for when you get to run up some of those mountain winding roads. You can power around tight switch back corners, no under-steer ,,,,,gives a big grin.

Harvey.

I second that.

Since you're finnish, you might want to take it a bit easy on the gravel first time around. I nearly went off the road the other day in a very tight bend. There is pronounced oversteer when turn-and-floor-it in slippery conditions and you need to get used to taht in order to correct with the front wheels. Still, the AWD was of good help to me, kept us on the road and got the nose pointing the right way.

And congrats on your work!

Just out of curiosity, why didn't you go for a DCCD trans?

Re: Traction project

First performance measurement done.

I attached two charts - speed vs time and g-force vs time.

It's about half a second quicker to 100km/h with the 3,7 VTD than with the 4,44 ACT because of more than enough traction - even though the gearing is taller. I am sure overhauling the transfer clutch would have helped with the ACT tranny - lots of front wheel spin.

On the speed chart there are graphs for the 4,444 ACT both in "Drive" and in "2nd manual". Also one for my 2006 3.0R Outback with the 5EAT. It looses by two full seconds.

On the g-force graph the effect of the iris valve can be seen - there's a clear hike in torque at 4500 rpm. The small turbo runs flat on its face at around 5500 rpm - shift point 6500 rpm (visual). Also the lower stall converter clearly helps with the small turbo - utilises the low end much better.

On the VTD run the boost was only 3 PSI - I need to adjust the waste gate, the whole turbo system was out for the drive train swap.
