Cover under engine compartment - Do I need it?
I was changing my oil last week. I was removing the cover to get to the filter and pan, and one of the screws that holds the cover broke in half, with half stuck inside the hole. Probably wear and tear from being removed so many times. I've been driving around with it off. If I leave it on, it'll probably rattle going over bumps. Is this a problem?
Thanks. Dave

you could use a zip-tie to hold it temporarily until you get a new fastener. i wonder what that sucker costs.

I think that the cover has some minimal effect on the coefficient of drag. Other than that, it is pretty useless, i think. I dip the bolts in the used oil to keep this from happening, but once they break, whatever.

I have broken a couple of those bolts. It's not too hard to remove the broken piece - if you can grab it with a pair of vice grips, just twist it out. If not, drill it and use an "easy out." Then my rule is - hand tight only!!! I only wish mechanics would do the same - I have about 3 stripped holes caused by mechanics tightening the bolts too much!!

I never had one on my car. There has been no engine damage or underside damage that I can see or feel. The only purpose I can think of is if you drive over a stick and it slams up and rips into your oil filter. But the chances of that happening are pretty small considring It would have to be a pretty big stick.

If the SVX gods put it there it must have a purpose. Think of the winter with all the slush and sand/salt splashing up into the engine. No sticks unless you're off roading.

I've been running with-out this cover since I put in the 5-speed, to no ill effects, I'm sure it affect the areodynamics a little, but not enough to bother me.

You all take that cover off to change the oil? I've always just left it on,

How can you remove the oil filter without removing the shield?

Wow, all y'all are doing it the hard way! I've only taken the shield off once, to change the transmission hoses. See, what I do is drive the car up on ramps, so it's a lot higher. Then I just reach up there where the oil filter is and grab it with my hand and twist. I use Fram filters which have those rubber-coated ends, so you don't even need a wrench. Of course a little oil will spill into the shield, but it just mixes with what's already there due to my engine seal leak

under cover off
A question for those that have the cover removed: is the cooling system temp higher, lower or the same as with it on?
I think having it off effects air flow. I keep the engine side of mine super clean. When I take it off I can see any new leaks. I got a dealer quote of $179 for a new one. eek: David:

Undercover, needed or not????
You blokes most probabley, don't like me butt en in all the time, BUT I just gota stick up for the designers of this great car.
The undercover does play a part in the design of the cooling of the heat exchangers. As the air flows under the front of the car, the space for it to flow through, gets smaller as the cover gets closer to the ground. This forces the air to flow quicker, as it does over a plane wing. This creates a low pressure area at the lowest point. This low pressure is open to the bottom of the engine compartment, which is well sealed at the front. The only way for air to flow into the compartment, to equalise the pressure, is through the front mounted heat exchangers. The faster the car travels the better the cooling. Another clue to the high speed function, this car was designed for. Harvey.
