Still can't start my 3.3L conversion
I am back at work on my Porsche 914 conversion, but am unable to start the engine. I verified that I have good fuel pressure going into the engine but do not have spark. I swapped igniter's but still no spark. I tried wiring a CEL to see if a crank or cam sensor was bad but it didn't seem to work. By checking the ECU pin the CEL is not getting any voltage. Is my ECU bad or maybe not turning on?
The ECU should be getting power; I've got a constant hot going to the ECU backup power supply wire and switched hots to the fuel pump and main relays. My fuel pump works fine, but maybe the main relay is not working? I don't have much more to do after I finish this wiring and really want to drive my Porscharu. Any ideas??

There are 3 wires feeding the ECU that have to be hot...one constant, 2 switched....
Do you have all 3 hooked up?

You need to get the CEL working to find out what the ECU is complaining about.
I don't have the wiring diagram to hand at present. IIRC the CEL is supposed to be connected to power on one side and to the ECU pin on the other. The ECU connects that pin to ground when it wants the light to come on. So you won't ever see any voltage on that pin. Don't take my word for it though, check the diagram.

I had posted the pin graphs and Plug Identitfyers a little while ago..> That would help in a big way

I do have 1 constant hot and 2 switched hots feeding the ECU. I also have the pin diagrams printed out, but for the CEL pin it doesn't trace the wire leaving the ECU. Where does the CEL wire get its power? If I add a power supply to the CEL wire how does it ground itself when it's triggered? Thanks

I've just checked the diagram and I was right.
Wire one side of the CEL to power and the other side to the ECU pin. The ECU will supply a ground to that wire when it wants to turn the CEL on.

b3lha, thanks! I may just have to leave work early today and try that once I get home.

a select monitor would be of great assistance here... See if you can get your hands on one

Tom, sorry I'm not familiar with a select monitor. I assume that's a computer tool to plug in and check diagnostics? Is this something you can purchase? I'll look into it...Thanks

*IF* you can find one its gonna cost out the.... well you know.
I was thinking maybe you could borrow one... but not many people have them anymore Tom |

Oh, I thought it was something at my local carquest. I'll try and wire the CEL when I go home. Thanks

Well I rigged up a light with 12V switched power on one side and the CEL wire out of the ECU to the other. With ignition power or trying to check the codes the light flashes randomly and very rapidly. It seems to flash with the clicking of the fuel injectors... Do I have something wired up wrong? Thanks for any ideas.

Are you absolutely sure that you are numbering the pins correctly? Remember the numbers go right to left when you are looking at the unit.
Here is the pinout. http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/user.php?mbtoloczko|16570

I'm sure I've got the CEL wire coming out of the ECU. I also double-checked the timing belt and all my other wires. The CEL still flashes rapidly to what sounds like the injectors clicking. Checking my wires I noted that both my Neutral switch wire (pin 10 of B60) and the parking switch wire (pin 9 of B60) showed 4.67 volts. I thought this was weird because they should be 0 for N or P respectively, and 8 volts for everything else. I tried grounding those wires to see if it would help because maybe the inhibitor switch was talking to the ECU, but it didn't change anything. Following someone else's thread here about the ignition coils, I checked their voltage as well. They are getting just under 12v with ignition on, but just under 9 with the starter cranking. Maybe too weak of a battery even though it shows 12v on the terminals? I'll try connecting to my large truck battery tomorrow and try jump starting it. I appreciate the suggestions.

Maybe you've hard wired in the "Check Mode" (connected the black test conectors......)
