Interesting little detail on the stock front differential

I was looking at my original user manual today (because I was bored), and noticed something interesting about the stock gearing setup. I must have missed this little detail before, but did anyone else here know that the FWD model has a lower final drive ratio for the front diff than the AWD?

Here's what I found:
AWD gearing chart
1st: 2.875
2nd: 1.545
3rd: 1.000
4th: 0.694
Rev: 2.272

Reduction: 1.000

Front final drive: 3.545
Rear final drive: 3.545

FWD gearing chart
1st: 2.875
2nd: 1.545
3rd: 1.000
4th: 0.694
Rev: 2.272

Reduction: 0.927

Front final drive: 3.700
Rear final drive: ------

Ever since my initial visit to the board, I've seen many members complaining that the stock 3.545 isn't low enough (and some have therefore modded a 4.11 or 4.44 into the equation). I agree. But since I've got a 3.70 instead, I don't really feel that badly about it anymore. It's still not low enough, but just an interesting point...

What exactly is "Reduction," and how come that's different as well?

Is that the reduction gearset, in the back of the tranny, that drives the front diff?

FWD diff ratio.

Yes the FWD version, front diff has the same ratio as the Euro version 3.7:1. Thats why they say the FWD version accelerates quicker than the US AWD version.

Harvey.

to add to harvey's staement, they also are a bit quicker due to less weight with all the rear driveline parts and there is less loss of power through the fwd than awd. Just a note

I hear ya, tomssvx! I definitely didn't know the little bit about the Euro SVX, though... Thanks Harvey (you always seem to come through, ya know?).

And as for the reduction ratio, I'm not quite sure what that means. I know what a reduction gearing is, but I'm not 100% certain on what Subaru is talking about in term of this ratio.

Can anyone fill us in? Harvey?
