Huck is exactly correct. A driveshaft from '97 Legacy Outback manual wagon or sedan (same part number for both) is the correct length for an SVX 5MT. As Huck said, to make the driveshaft mount up properly, you'll need to swap out the carrier bearing-to-chassis mounting bracket on the Legacy driveshaft for the one on the SVX. Drill out the spot welds that hold the mounting bracket to the carrier bearing assembly on both driveshafts, and then spot weld the one from the SVX onto the Legacy driveshaft. Very straightforward.

Thanks for the great tip Huck. :-)

revision to previous statement

It turns out that the front section of the Legacy driveshaft is a bit longer than what is optimum. When the driveshaft is slid into the tail section of the 5MT, it just barely bottoms out on the tranny. Normally, there should be some slack to allow for movement of the tranny and rear diff. My mechanic removed a small amount of material from the tail section of the tranny to add clearance. This should work for my car because the motor and tranny are supported with STi group N mounts. It may not be enough though if softer mounts are used.

Huck, when you compared the length of the Legacy OB auto driveshaft to that of the SVX driveshaft, were the driveshafts *exactly* the same length?

I got a PM from Huck. He said the front section was about 1/2" longer than he expected. This jives with my mechanic's estimate that the front section is about 1/2" longer than what he thought it should be. So it looks like that in addition to replacing the center mount bracket, it is also necessary to shorten the front section of the driveshaft by about 1/2". Not sure if buying a used driveshaft and shortening it is any cheaper than having the stock driveshaft lengthened and not having to deal with switching the center mount brackets.
