Funny Idle

When starting my car when the engine is cold, it has trouble finding a good idle rpm. It will start, idle at very low rpm, then rev up, fall again, rev up, fall again, etc. It will do this maybe three times at most, then idle smoothly with no problems. Any ideas?

Edit: To my knowlegde, it hasn't thrown any codes, but I'll check in another couple days.

If it does that quickly without ever resting on a speed until the end of the cycle then I had the same problem. The problem went away after the injectors were cleaned by a garage with the system that connects to the fuel rail. The cleaner is flushed thru the fuel rail, cleans out the injectors and combustion chamber. I do remember the name is MotorVac and I think it is around $159. I think it is worthwhile on higher mileage engines.
