Unhappy Tranny Code 24, No AWD

We have a 92 AWD that has had no AWD since we bought it. Here's what we know so far:

1. Transmission threw a code 24, Duty solenoid C.

2. Brought it to a tranny shop, had the duty solenoid C replaced with a new one.

3. Also replaced the clutch plates with new ones just in case.

4. Transmission shop found something was sheared off (drum assembly? something like that)...replaced now.

5. AWD STILL NOT WORKING!

6. Cleared all codes, and left battery unplugged overnight. No codes now.

7. Drove car around for a half hour or so.

7. Checked codes on TCU: Code 24 Duty Solenoid C showed up again.

Anyone have any ideas on what to do from here? We're not sure what else to check, and troubleshooting at the dealer or anywhere else is sooo spendy

Thanks!
Staci

Hi Staci,

Special compliments and thanks for the explicit tabulated history, which tells the full story.

It could be that there are debris circulating in the fluid and something has again jammed the C solenoid. The time factor tends to support such a theory/posssibilty.

However faulty workmanship in connection with the overall work done can not be ruled out.

Thanks Trevor! We took it to the dealership to be told the duty solenoid c was bad (again/still). Seems to be one of two things:

1. The solenoid was never replaced by the first place
2. The solenoid that replaced the old one, which was a new part, was defective.

We're thinking it was a defective part, and will be getting a new one. The part itself is warranteed, but of course all the labor is going to be charged again when it gets fixed it'll be nice, but for now it sucks big time.

Thanks for the help!

The fact that there was a delay before the code registered suggests something intermittent, debris or mechanical. Make sure this is kept in mind. The solenoid could be electrically and physically OK. Make sure everything is clear of possible debris.

The shop may argue, but the manuals state that the the diagnostic system will show up a valve not moving correctly, this may sound far fetched but it is possible by registering abnormal inductance.

Why are they not covering the labor cost? The conclusion is a faulty part, right?

They installed the part and should be responsible for fixing it properly, as you paid them to do in the first place. That's my opinion anyway.
