Angry The death of a Subaru

Well,

After working a 14 hour day yesterday...I came out to my SVX put it into reverse...stopped...then drive...(of course being in a hurry, gave it gas before it fully went into drive)...and proceeded to destroy whatever was left of the drivetrain.

Not exactly sure what the problem is as of yet. Sounds like a snapped drive shaft or something...however nothing (at a glance) appears broken. However roll the car a few feet forward and your rewarded with a tranny shattering THUMP.

Needless to say this isn't what I wanted to hear when my budget isn't what I would call less than tight.

I know it's no great relief to hear someone say "that sucks." But, that sucks.

Many of us can relate. Don't let it ruin your SVX-perience. Hope you can get her back on the road soon.

Thumbs down

Verdict....blown tranny. Seems I managed to snap off a 2 1/2" long piece of metal (forget the name of it) and it managed to shear off a good majority of transmissions pieces.

Subaru will charge me $2700 for the rebuilt, $3500 installed with taxes.

Ugg....!

Too bad I don't have anywhere near that much money right now.

Now here is the question however. Does anyone have any ideas on what I could do with this to make it better? Anyone know what regearing would involve, and whether its worth it? Possibly going to stick rather than slushbox again....that kind of thing.

I've heard it asked about a couple of times and even once by myself. General consensus is for the money you could probably rebuild an automatic three times by the time you made and installation for a standard. I think if there was a standard version of the SVX the idea would be much simpler but to modify something from another vehicle would be a bit much. Also there is the whole engine control thing that has a lot of handshakes with the transmission that would have to be resolved. If you decide to go that route please keep us posted.

Best of luck in the mean time.

You might want to check around a little. When a Subaru dealer replaced my trans. with the Subaru remanufactured one, it was only 2800 installed, after the core exchange. It may have gone up since then(1-1/2 yrs ago), but there has been a wide margin on the prices. Good Luck whatever you do.
