Crazy idea-what do you think?
Ive been looking at getting a used truck but cant seem to find anything to my liking. Ive been throwing around the idea of a 1990-1998 legacy wagon-outback and making it INTO a truck. I think it can be done with enough time and the right tools. Im not talking about a simple cut and hack but a decent conversion with a bed floor, tailgate etc. What do you think? Too much work or should I buy a crappy S10 or Ranger

I've considered the same thing....but a cheap truck would be WAY easier, and cheaper, plus have a stronger frame for heavier hauling.....

Didn't Subaru already do that? The Baja? It's basically an Outback with a bed, and lots of plastic cladding.

I have a Baja and love it - but if I had any say in the final design I would have omitted the rear seats and made the bed longer. Probably too expensive a variation from the Outback for Subaru for how many they hoped to sell, which in the end was far more than they sold.

Ive seen that brat too on another site-awesome. There are some Australian websites that show how they lift Subarus. I know this idea is a longshot and the Baja has too short of a bed. I know reinforcing the subframe is needed as well as the roof but I think its not impossible. The reason for this is Outbacks and Legacy wagons can be had for very little with low mileage. The rednecks around here "prize" their S10s Ranger, etc like they are friggin gold
 I will get some photos together for a tasteful conversion.

I saw a Baja with a canopy on it yesterday. It looked great! They were able to put a rack on the roof of the rig and another one on the canopy. It gave them a much better distance between the racks for longer stuff.

I would start with a car that has damage to the rear roof area or an older car. Ive seen the forester photoshop also. I dont know why Subaru has not developed one of these truck concepts into the market. After owning (or it owned me
) a Ford Ranger I cant trust the Big three as far as quality goes
