You still get a ride and drive if I get her. The 1984 928 S is in the garage right now. She sure looks pretty sitting there.
You'll definitely beat my car from a roll (if it's still stock ), but remember it's 'rated' at 230hp, but from dyno results it's actually making closer to 255-260hp at the crank.

I wouldn't have been able to go 13.7@98 if it made a true 230hp at the crank.

How hard is a Turbo swap? I read if I go with a new Turbo, they have been getting 350+ at the wheels with stock internals. The 18 year old Turbo is the biggest limiter. The new Garrett's are supposed to blow the old KKK's away.

Not sure about the Porsche since the turbo is partially covered by the intake manifold - but on a WRX/STI, a turbo swap is a 2-3 hour job tops.

I plan on keeping my car stock for a while, but when I do modify it, I'll go straight to Cobb Stage 3 w/ VF39 rurbo (stock USDM STI turbo). It'll run me close to $2000 ($600 for Cobb's Access Port, $800 for a turbo-back exhaust & $600 for a used STI turbo and TMIC). Instant 276+whp and 300wtq. Get a $400 Protune (uses Cobb's Access Port to fine tune performance map) and you'll be right at 300whp and 320wtq. That's enough power to run mid 12's at 108-109mph.

P.S. Insert pic of a 944 turbo rounding a corner at Summit Point...

In My Opinion

the SVX is what Porsche should have built instead of the 928, with the 3.6 Turbo, 6 sp box and Porshe/Audi AWD. Even if they couldn't pack all that technology into the car without it weighing any less than 3600 lbs, a 350-400 hp engine would still provide stunning performance, even w/an auto. It will be v. interesting to see how ECUTune's supercharged 3.3 performs.
As far as I'm concerned the 928 is the anti-Porsche...ugly, overweight, gas guzzeling, ridiculously expensive to maintain and still only capable of carrying two people. The 928 is the answer to a guestion no one asked and a bloated monument to hubris, over engineering and egotism.
There are a number of V8 powered cars that cruise, handel and stop well and are far less costly than a 928 in every way.

you don't get it - and you won't unless you've driven one.

ugly - that's a personal opinion, but i think they are beautiful cars.

overweight - no heavier than an SVX

gas guzzling - WTF? its a big V8, not a hybrid econobox

ridiculously expensive to maintain - i had mine for five years, and spent $90 for a coolant leak repair and $1200 for timing belt/h2o pump/spark plug service at a Porsche dealer. as with most performance cars, if properly maintained, can be extremely reliable. get one that wasn't, and it will drain your wallet. a good example is a beat and neglected SVX.

only capable of carrying two people - the back seats were no less spacious than the SVX rear seats. it was a 2+2, not a family sedan.

that over engineering appears in cars today - it was well ahead of its time. check out the engine/transmission layout in the new Corvettes - the 928 was front engine, rear tranmission in 1977. one of the first cars to have airbags. it had a variable induction system that can be found in modern cars.

egotism?

there are also a number of V8 powered cars that cruise, handLE, and stop worse .... and cost MORE.

it almost sounds like a 928 ran over your dog - why do you hate them so much?

From a 20 mph roll, I can 'compete' w my 318, 2 barrell, 65 cuda, in stock trim, and 2.73 gears!!
Or WORSE yet!! my 1978 Ford F-350 TOW TRUCK!!!( with over !,000,000 miles service!!) ( have HOLMES, Will Travel!!) My son in law tried me with a Dodge dart, but I shut him down!!! He couldn't hit the turns as hard as the ol' 8,400 lb tow truck could!!

It was fun, but I wouldn't want to make a career out of it!!

( yea, It's tired out!! It's the middle of the night here!!) I'm a bit of a 'chain yanker' and the Lord Calvert may be talking.
But if the truth be Known, I have a 65 Dodge A-100 van that will PUSH a gas burning Ford or Chevy 'off the line' faster than it will pull itself!!, and from a 20 MPH roll, , carries the front wheels about 60 ft!!!

It was one of my 'nightmares' that didn't go away when I woke up!!

Alan, the 84 928 S I have in the garage until after Reading really impressed me. It has 41k on her and is black over black. All motor and tranny work done, just needs cosmetics. I think he wants around $10k.

If I don't have a P-car of my own for next year, I'll have to arrage for another one. It was fun. I wish we had better weather.

I really hope you have your own P-car by next year Dan. This long 'wait' for one is really going to make you cherish it when your dream finally comes true.

Remember all my silly threads about what car to get after the SVX? Volvo S60R, MazdaSpeed 6, Impreza WRX, Forester XT, Legacy 2.5GT, etc. When I finally shopped for and purchased my '06 WRX, it felt like a lifelong dream had finally come true.
