Thumbs down Subaru blows it again

Well, I was all pumped up about Subaru producing this new awesome SUV/Brat-truck like vehicle. The STX (the development name) looked to be like my next investment for a daily driver car while I fix up and baby my SVX a bit. Subaru BLEW IT! They took an awesome design and lightened the load. It no longer is apealing to me. The new name BAJA takes the place of the STX development name and with it went all the cool features. Look what they did:

STX
  • 230 HP Supercharged 2.5
  • 17" rims
  • 8.5" ground clearance
  • 5 speed with dual range xfer case

BAJA
  • 165 HP Outback motor
  • 16" rims
  • 7" ground clearance
  • 5 speed with no xfer options

Do I really need to go on here? I just want to cuss now!

Chris,

Do you have a link to a picture of the HaHa er Baja?

My '97 Outback has 7.3 inches of ground clearance.

Larry III,
The Subaru site now has the Baja on it.
www.subaru.com
I'd still like to have one, although not nearly as bad since they neutered it.

Ugh! Is subaru having Americans design their cars now? "Hey guys, we took a chevy avalanche and made some of the plastic bits shiny, cool hu?"

Perhaps they have just lost Giugiaro's phone number...

Or perhaps I just woke up and can't yet blink my eyes, let alone "get" a new car design...

GM'ed up?

Perhaps we are seeing some of the first fruits of the Subaru/GM association? Don

Significant Technical Input
It reminds me of the Exploder Sport Trac. Wait 'til next year, they'll probably give it the power then because they won't be making big changes to it for a few years.

i am sure they will blow the 2003 SVX too.....

they will probably come up with some prototypes then ruin the design or change the name.

I am afraid I want to like that thing a little more than I actually DO like it. The idea is cool, the initial designs I saw looked pretty cool. The end result looks just a little too Aztekian. Maybe they just picked a bad color for the pictures on their website (I am sure Randy will be very pleased)

A Baja with an EJ20T might be interesting.

I wish it had the little jet fighter seats with the handles. Those were fun.

Well, I think that's a little unfair. We are, after all, driving perhaps the most forward-thinking automobile since the Studebaker Golden Hawk (which didn't exactly give them the recognition they deserved either).

I have to admit to being somewhat disappointed by the Baja when I went to their website the other night, but it is a step up (not merely to the side) from the Brat, or from those silly-looking, huge trucks from GM or Ford.

We got the WRX in the package that the boys upstairs figured they could sell the most of - seems they didn't want to risk another SVX fiasco. (Although - and I say it again to my own dismay - if they just would have advertised it!)

The new 3-liter six in the various Legacy trims may well see other models/variations if they can get them to sell in their present mode.

I am personally very impressed with the LL Bean car, though it seems a little over-priced, (or it did before I saw the Durango R/T - sheesh) and hope to soon corral one.

I personally, am not quite ready to give up on Subaru yet.

Where would I go?

Do what?!?!? Which Baja were you looking at? It is EXACTLY like those trucks. Although, it looks like they threw them in the dryer and shrunk them. Where's the scoop? Heck, it looks like a Forester that's had its hiney sheared off. I was hoping for something a lot more aggressive looking. I don't know that they've "blown it" altogether, but, they've blown it as far as my interest. I thought they were finally going to have another Subaru that I would actually want to own. However, I will reserve final judgment for when I see it in the flesh.

ok i just went to look at the car.....

huge failure.....they should have named it the BooHoo. because that is all i could think of doing after i saw it.

as far as i am concerned subaru is going backwards. they do not make one car i would even consider owning. the svx and the 2.5rs were the only subarus i have ever been interested in. now that they have done away with two door cars i am not interested in any of their vehicles. give me a two door legacy or svx or even an impreza......??

NOTE TO SUBARU........PLEASE MAKE SOMETHING THAT IS AGGRESSIVE, SPORTY, AND HAS ONLY TWO DOORS.

And hopefully, not in the yellow

And, sorry, it is not as ugly as the Avalanche. Man, is that thing ugly. Big and ugly. Bugly.

Well, if I drive up and it's . . . that color, I'll just keep on going. Bad enough that they've screwed up the aggressive look withoug adding insult to injury.

Up, up. and away...

<I wish it had the little jet fighter seats with the handles. Those were fun>

Pulling the handle would create a sensation that some might equate to "fun". Others just call it "ejection"....
