Installed Rebuilt Front Axles...

One of my planned Winter mods/maintenance was to get two new rebuilt front axles for my car, as my driver's side cv joint made an occassional tick-tick sound at low speeds ever since the day I bought it last April.

Put my car up on the lift at Tom's (Svxfiles) place and 1.5 hours and two Coors each later, the new axles were installed!

Old Axles

Old (bottom) vs New (top) Axle

New Front Axles Installed!

Out of curiosity, I weighed an old vs rebuilt axle on Tom's digital scale and both weighed 16lbs each.

As I plan on drag racing/autoXing my car heavily this year, I had Tom look over my suspension components and everything seems to be in order. My ball joints are nice a firm!

Not to get off topic but are those the O2 sensors in the exhaust?

YUP!

If your SVX is a OBDI car (92 - 95), you have two sensors (they are both the same) just like you see in the photo.
If you have a OBDII SVX (96 - 97), you have a third O2 sensor (this one is different from the front two) attached to the main CAT.

Chike,
Good stuff! Did an "up close" inspection of the old axles show any specific wear?
Looks like you've had one of your primary O2 sensors replaced somewhere along the line, as the insulation is different on the two in the picture.

Bill,

I looked over the used axles and found no visible signs of wear. Tom mentioned that this was the quickest axle swap he'd done and everything popped out very easily.

The insulation is the same, but one 'sheath' seems not to want to stay over the lower part of the wires for some reason...

Not sure I understand your question, but Tom and I removed the axles by popping out the little metal clip that locks them in place (near to the front diff), and then undoing the bolt that locks them into the wheel hubs. From there, we removed the one bolt on each side that connects the lower control arm to the hub (by the ball joint). In doing this, we were able to swing the hubs outward, and slowly wiggle the axles out.

Everything went smoothly.

My trans and front diff are from a '96 Impreza Outback Sport. The SVX axles (old ones and the rebuilt) popped in like a charm.
