Angry Tire Dilemma

I have hankook ventus k102 245-45-16 tires on my car. One of them was just damaged beyond repair. Every tire store i take it to tells me i have to buy 4 new tires. The tires have 80% tread on them, would it really be that much of a problem to put one new tire on the car? When i bought the car, it had 2 different size/brand tires on it and it didnt seem to cause problems.

What do you think I should do?

Thanks

I have a set of 4 Kuhmo Ecsta supra 712's that are worn a little funny. They still have some tread on them, but not much. You can have them (all four) for say........$35 + shipping?

Let me know.

When you run different tires the wheels turn at different speeds and destroy the transfer clutches.

you should buy 4 new tires.

but if you insist on trying to buy just one here's what I would do. Mount it on the front because the rear is limited slip. Put the new tire on the right front which seems to wear slightly faster than the others (on my car anyway). Adjust tire pressures (with warm tires) so the radius of the four tires are the same.

In the final analysis, and putting aside handling issues, the mechanical bits only care about equal rolling radius.

I agree with Lee.
In a perfect world where price is not an object, a new set of matched tires would be best.
But, with 80% left on the other three, buy only one, put the best one on the right front, the second best on the left front, and the other two in back.
It is a directional tire, so make sure the "tire experts" don't 'Accidentially" put the tire, or wheel on backwards.
We have that exact set of tires on Nicks', and Dianas' cars, right now, and I had that set on mine, before my 17s.
I/we have been very happy with the traction/wear/price and when its time for Daves' svx tires to be replaced,(He's next) it will be a set of Hankooks,245/45/16s. Tom

At the very least I would buy 2 tires, not sure it matters where you put the new ones as long as you don't "mix and match"
ie: keep the new ones together, front or rear, as Lee said, the mechanical bit's only care about equal rolling radius

If i had the money i would definately buy 4 new tires. but i think i think my best option right now would be to get one new tire and put it on the front right, because i have also noticed that that tire wears faster than the others. the damaged tire is the front drivers side.

Im going to have to order it online somewhere because les schwab refuses to sell me just one tire because of liability issues or something.

tom, i agree these are great tires, im very happy with them.

If anyone has another suggestion, I'd be glad to hear it.

Thanks alot for all the replies

Depending on your finance situation, I'm sure they would sell two.

BTW, how's Coos Bay these days - haven't been there for almost 20 years.

Coos Bay is decent. Probably hasnt changed much since you were last here. Not a lot to do for a young guy like myself, and the weather is terrible with all the rain and wind and such. But i cant complain, much.

les schwab can order me two tires for $198, but they may refuse to install two tires on an awd car, like they refused to install just one. I could just have the tires put on the wheels and then put them on the car myself.

Or, i can order 1 tire online for $118 with shipping.

so the question is,

Would it be better to have one new tire on the front right, and the rest with 80% tread. or, two new tires on the front, and 80% tread on the rear?

The first option would obviously be cheaper, but i dont know if it would be worth saving a little money and risking more complicated problems.

Thanks alot!

before I answer, when you say 80% tread, what do you mean? Have you actually measured the tread depth. If they are truly 80% left, then I'd probably buy just one if I couldn't afford 4

I havent measured the tread. the guy at les schwab said they looked around 80%. they have around 3500 miles on them. i dont know how i would measure them, as i dont know how much tread a new one is supposed to have on it.

thanks

At only 3500 miles, you *should* be fine with just one tire. Just make sure it is the same kind.

I just measured Diana's left front tire, the big center groove is 7mm deep. She has 5609 miles since her alignment, and we replaced her tires about a week before that.
Nick's car is at work, now, so I'll measure his tomorrow.

Why don't you measure the depth of your remaining tires so we know for sure. Tom

just measured, in the rain, and its right in the 6.5-7mm range. but i measured the front right tire, which seems to wear the fastest.

Im just going to order one tire tomorrow. I need to order it by 11am so that it gets here on wednesday, otherwise i have to wait till saturday. I will look at the tire when it gets here and if it seems a lot different, I can always order more. but i know i need at least one, so i will just do that for now.
