High amp alternator?!

Anyone know where I can pick up an alternator that has relatively high amps for my 92 svx?

try to use the search button when you can...

I've looked into this issue quite a bit.. from what i understand, there aren't any (that i've found) high amp rectifiers for our alts... Heres all the options i've found so far..

Stock alts are ~95 amps
Remans range from 80-95 amps from your auto supply store check local pricing
You can have a local alt shop rebuild your own, for slightly less than getting a reman. (they can sometimes get a little more current out of it.. i'd check into this option)
you can rebuild it yourself with a little technical Know-how (really not that hard.. search for beavs "christmas tree dashboard light cure <55$" thread.. i'm personally doing this option)
i was quoted 700$ for 160 amp alt from H/O aftermarket company... which is rediculous.

i may have the parts that you'd need up for sale, because in the process of rebuilding my own, i think that one of the bearings is dragging much more than it should... I haven't decided whether i'm going to try it, or sell the parts.. the process is realy very simple.. i just don't want to rebuild it and have the bearing fail on me.

I got a 110 amp one from bosh. It was about $400.

... ouch.. $$$$

My personal advice would be to stay away from bosch remans...
i'm guessing the 110 amp wasn't a reman??.. especially with the 400$ price tag.
The remanufactured quality control of bosch has been questionable at best.

I just looked a napaonline.com and they now list a

110 amp NAPA Power Supreme Alternator - Remfd (Premium) for $184.00

part# RAL138531

They also now list the bosh as being only 95 amp for $224.00

When I got mine it was listed as 110 amp. So mine is some ware between 95-100 amp

That part number, i believe, is the the 110 amp NAPA replacement for the SVX, however that price is after without the core charge... they typically charge about 60$ for the core, so if you want to keep your old one, it "costs" you 60$

I've been noticing a lot of alternator issues lately...what's going on.

I think my car has been reading the forums because my alternator also died. This is the third time I've had alternator issues.

I stole (borrowed) the alternator from my dad's SVX until I can get mine rebuilt at a local shop.

Probably the combination of wiring age, alternator age, and increased load from aftermarket accessories.

I'm still keeping an eye out for any Police or Fire vehicle alternators that can fit our cars with minimal fabrication. I'll keep you posted on the results.

Trust me, ive been using the search button alot, I found a company here in gj, amazingly, that will custom build a 165 amp alternator (from scratch, not a reman) for a svx for $425, not too bad of a price considering that 700$ one you mentioned.

I would be interested in this. Let me know how it turns out. They must move some of the components out of the alternator.

I have my Alpine stereo (1080W total + 1F cap). I don't even turn up the volume that much. I thought the cap would help save the alternator.

.. the cap won't do much of anything... at all.. theres a huge difference between the time a capacitor can release stored energy (microseconds) and the time an amplifier needs it to play a musical tone (half seconds to longer)

i'm running over 1900 watts in my car... but the alt was on its way out before i ever installed anything.... still lasted a year hehe
