Tycho,
Great stuff! Very well documented. Were you just doing a straight rebuild, or something "special"?
Any chance you might be able to check out how much lift the engine can handle on the intake and exhaust valves before the engine becomes an "interference" design? A dial micrometer and a very light coil spring should do the trick.

Looks like a fairly young engine - given the fact that the bore marks are still on the sleeve...

What are you up to?

I'm wondering if he is putting the internals into those cardboard boxes for storage and organization, or for shipment...

Excellent bit of info. It is now on my computer for safe keeping.

Parts are going in the box after being run through the parts washer for safe transportation back to my house.

I'll see about checking on the interferance lift values when I begin test fitting everything during the reassembly phase. Note that since you have hydro lifters you're still quite limited as far as cam options (hydro lifters and aggressive profiles don't place nice). I've run into this problem on my saturn and have begun a conversion for it using Kawasaki KZ1000 shim over buckets. From the "look" of things the EG33 has the same lifter diameter as the saturn (pre 99 LL0 motor) and could potentially use the same setup (the kawa pieces). This is someting else I will dig deeper into.

The direction of the rebuild is yet unknown...I have to make some decisions about that in the next couple weeks. Boost might come into the equation...but with a good rod ratio and short stroke...a high RPM NA combination with ITBs is not out of the question either (with the proper headwork to allow the motor to breathe).

No idea on milage...this engine had been swapped (and apparently in a fire also as much of the engine harness was fried tho the harness on the car was fine).

Camera is a Olympus C-750 Ultra Zoom.

Cams

Tycho,

Probably not looking at anything too radical with the cams -- little better breathing (couple more mm of lift?) and a little more duration (maybe 10-15 degrees?). Thanks for checking into this during the build process.

Wow...look at the hone on those cylinder bores. They look incredible, I wish there was a way to tell how many miles are on this one.

Did you get the engine separate from the car? If not, get the VIN and do a Carfax check.

Not sure if Subaru did it on the SVX (or any car for that matter), but the VIN could be stamped on the engine block.
