yeah no mater how bad condition a svx is in id buy it anyway. they will run forever if you fix them up. but i would definately completly replace your tranny. personally i would replace the tranny and rear diff with one from a 97 outback it has a higher final drive(4.44) witch improves acceloration greatly but lowers your mechanical max speed to 156 i think. do a search for 4.44 a few owners on this thread have done 4.11/4.44 conversion and like them alot.

someone post the link to dayle's svx store its 6 am and i can remember it.

that store has some great parts for the car at verry good prices. their rotors are good to and he has a built tranny that he swears by. and check out ecutune.com their stage one kit is the best thing you can do for the car. it improves low end tork and lets you run 87 octain instead of 93.

thanks

did a lot of search on archives

looks like i will need a tranny and rear diff from a 96-97 Legacy Outback to get 4.44 gears.. also did a search for 4.44, and I am already looking forward to the extra toqrue

didnt come across any installation faq's,...am I to assume this is plug & play? it just bolts up, all electrical plugs fit, no machining/trimming required, etc?

I am gonna call the used parts places, .. I have 2 choices:

JDM parts
USDM parts

does it matter which shop i should call?

thanks again

Snik,

Check out the locker for SVX-FF. He has a write-up on his conversion to 4.11 gears. My locker has some pics of the process as I went with 4.11 gears as well.

The only member who has 4.44 gears up and running in his and his son's SVXs is SVXfiles. He also helped me a great deal in doing my swap.

Good luck!

ok, got a 97 automatic from a legacy outback (2.5L) + rear end for the same car for $1400 cdn ($1160 usd), car has 87k miles on it.

it has 4.44 gears so i guess that will fix my current tranny issues + gives me 4.44 gears

is that a good price?

as soon as swap begins I will take pics daily... check this post often (swap will most likely begin next week)

engine is ok.

charged it, started it and it ran fine... i am gonna read the tranny error codes, and then drain the tranny fluid and remove the pan to see if there is any shavings there... & if oil is black.

if i find nasty surprises in there, i will swap w/ the legacy tranny and rear end

if oil is clean and all is well.. then mostl likely it will be a solenoid issue... can i buy the solenoid pack from the dealer? will the tranny need to come apart to access these solenoids?

i am hoping its just a solenoid issue, and that oil is clean w/ no shavings there...in which case i will install an auxilliary oil cooler and oil filter and change the solenoids and i am all set.

i have taken thu and fri off, so i will tear it apar on those 2 days and post results

in the mentime... talk to me about solenoids... i know how to pull the codes.. just wondering how much they are... are they back ordered... are they rebuildable... how do i access them...

thanks

If the 4.44 rear is not a LSD then you will need to swap the ring and pinion out. The SVX rear drive axels will only fit a LSD rear.
Good luck and welcome to the site future 4.?? brother.

LSD diffs... the quick version

First you have to keep the final gear ratios the same. I.E. 4.44 in front, 4.44 in rear. DO NOT MIX MATCH If the 4.44 rear looks the same as your SVX rear then stick your fingure in the axle shaft hole. to feel if it is open all the way through. If so then it should be a LSD rear diff. I am about 95% sure of this.

If there is a large pin that obstucts the axle shaft hole the you will need to switch the ring and pinion onto the svx LSD. I used the svx rear carrige and just swapped the ring and pinion over. The LSD diff has notches cut into the housing. Carrier with nubs Carrier without nubs

LSD SVX dif on left / nonLSD on right

Side shot of LSD diff that will work with SVX

Additional Pics from svxfiles locker

Feel free to ask any questions you want, none will be stupid ones.

Steve 4.11 tranny swap writeup

Special thanks to Tom (svxfiles) for his photos that I used without asking.

thank you again,.. ok, based on your description, I know how to identify lsd vs non-lsd now.. looking forward to sticking my finger in the rear end to see if its obstructed or not

this is my understanding of this whole thing...please correct me if I am wrong

a) if the legacy outback rear diff doesnt have LSD, then I use the 4.44 ring and pinion (from the legacy) and put it in the svx diff because the svx drive shafts will not fit a legacy diff that does not have LSD (I guess because the non-LSD legacy diff will have smaller holes & shafts wont fit)

b) if the legacy rear diff has LSD then i dont need to swap anything, i can just take the svx diff out and install the complete LSD equipped legacy rear end.

key point to remember is to grab the tranny & diff from the same car to ensure they match

am I missing anything?

thanks

yayyy... thanks

so I guess, I will be losing my lsd rear after the 4.44 upgrade...

if i happen to get a 4.44 non-lsd rear, I will have to swap the guts over to the inside of svx diff hosuing... & therefore losing my lsd along the way... oh well!

i also noticed in the picture gallery, the nubs were being grinded off... in your post you said the lsd rear has nubs... so i assume I will need to grind off the nubs on my svx diff when fitting a non-lsd pinion gear due to clearance issues

I am getting this... thank you again...

swapping the speedo sensor, installing an inline oil cooler and oil filter, doing the rear end thingie we discussed above and I am set

will post pics and results thu. night

You have to keep the LSD rear because of the SVX rear axles. Here is what I did for mine.

ring & pinion swap

Good luck
