You're kinda like me. I braved my last two winters driving my rwd '00 SVT Lightning. It did ok only when there were flurries coming down, but anything heavier than that and I needed to park it and bum a lift to work with my wife...

not to bash the car any more than i already do (), but my svx handled awful in the snow last year. i go snowboarding at least once a week, and its like a 2 hour drive to get to the mountains from where i live, and it was really bad in the svx last winter. i usually take off work when there's powder coming down, so i'm always driving on unplowed roads. on the way up, my best friend goes "i'm going to die... in your car... we're both going to die", and it really kinda felt that way considering the car couldn't really drive in a straight line after a turn. so among other problems, eventually i just bought a jeep. i was sick of taking out my 96 bronco to drive in 4" of snow, getting 8 miles a gallon, just to feel safe. its a car... i woudn't care if it had 6 wheels and it was awd, its not stable.

Trouble is, road salt does its damage in places you can't really wash.

This will be my first winter with an SVX as well. I can't wait for the snow...but that's mostly due to snowboarding...

However, I do look forward to AWD this winter. Twice last winter I got caught with my CRX + Falken Azenis in the snow. Let me tell you....trying to get anywhere like that is a study in futility.

For anyone who has never had an AWD car in the snow before, make sure you still have a decent set of tires. AWD is not a replacement for good all season or snow tires. You can check my locker to see what can happen when you use summer tires (bald ones at that) even with AWD. Not only can't you go anywhere with tires like that, but stopping is an issue too.

This will be my first winter with my SVX. I hope it is as good as my '90 Taurus. During the blizzard last year, that thing was a tank, never let me down...

Very, very true. AWD (or 4WD for that matter) is definitely no replacement for some good all-season tires.

My M+S Bridgestone tires still have over 60% tread life left in them so I should be fine.

the svx is a subaru i had to drive for Reisterstown to salisbury md (160 miles) in almost a foot of show and she did ok. you just have to adjust your driving and check your tires. im not going to kid i hated every moment of it but it got mt there in one peace like every other subaru. im thinking of switching cars to my old 95 legacy for the winter and pooping the svx in the garage. the legacy is lighter with less hp.

I was thrilled with how my car handled in the snow when I still had tread on my tires, then very unthrilled about how it handled when the tires didn't.

I completeley agree with that one. My car didn't perform that well in the snow last winter because of my tires. Hopefully now that i have new tires it will perform great. But yes the AWD is no substitution for tires.
