Stupid Land Rover... that is no SVX.
I have found my SVX to perform much better in deep snow (fresh or semi-fresh) compared to even real thin packed stuff. It still has the same tires it had when purchased 6 years ago... mediocre all-seasons. There fare poorly now (bad tranny doesn't help)... but a couple years ago she would get pulled around and slide plenty on hard packed slick stuff... then a turn onto my rode (fairly steep hill and a few long blocks) covered in untouched snow that was piled higher (by a few inches) than the front of the hood. The SVX just PLOWED through... punch it, slip a tad, then take off without a worry as to losing control. I couldn't see too well since so much snow was flying over the front of the car... oh well. I'd love to see what she can do with a dedicated set of good snow tires!

no prob
i've ultra-high performance all reason tires on my svx ... i've had no probs on snow. i love driving or racing on the snow. that's fun. i'm quite confident of driving my svx anything up to 6 or 8 inches snow. anything's more than that, i have to be careful ...last year i was onced got stuck in the 12 inches snow of one parking lot ...that's my bad ...that's too deep for an svx.

Seasvx,
You are correct in your accessment of the SVX vs. the Outback. After I tested the tires on the SVX, I took our '97 OB wagon out to test its tires. They are new (~3000 miles) Yoko Ageis LS whitewalls, stock size. I went to the same lot as I did for the SVX and used a 'virgin snow' section. I performed the same "stupid things." Generally, the OB was a little better than the SVX in the snow & ice. I attribute this to the fact that the OB tires are narrower than the SVX tires, there is less torque from the OB 4-cyl. engine, and the design of the OB's AWD system. In addition I think that the front back weight distribution of the OB wagon is better then that of the SVX. Don't get me wrong, the SVX is alot more fun to drive than the OB in almost any kind of weather. Last night and this morning (from & to work) I drove both cars. It was pouring and since the snow was melting, fog clouds were forming at road level. The real challenge was being able to see. For some reason the yellowed plastic lenses over the SVX headlights worked better than the clear glass ones on the OB even though the OB put out much more light. My biggest problem this morning was 18-wheeler trucks in the left lane on the expressway doing only about 45 mph. Of course we were passing cars & SUVs going slower in the other 2 lanes . But really, only 45 mph in the left lane of I-95 & I-476 should be outlawed. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Benebob, Nice shot !!! However, you spelled Delaware wrong; and as Rosie says; "Spelling does count."

If you can't count much either, you should try that new KY math. It goes something like this: "First fingers & toes, then eyes, ears, & nose."

MY $ .02
From my point of view (based on what I know about Subaru and what I read in the R&T guide), the SVX was designed with the intent of great performance in any weather, that was the whole point of the AWD setting it about from it's "competitors" of the time (watch the dealer training video where they race a 300ZX and 3000GT I think it was on wet pavement LOL). Of course it isn't meant to drive in snow as deep as a real 4X4 or even an Outback (which was invented a few years after SVX came out), but I'm sure rain and snow performance was considered and as anyone who has read the literature of '92 knows, marketed. As Jim has attested, dry road performance, especially in corners, is also helped along by the AWD greatly.
I know several folks here in the Northwest, myself included, that can only afford one car in their stable, and that is a daily driver, the SVX, specifically because it rains so much here and many go up to the mountain passes and unpredicatable snow activity on a weekly basis.

i have perelli p8000's on my svx, and its handling in the snow is pretty decent considering the car's design. Its low to the ground, so yeah, you're gonna be pushing through anything above 4" of snow. The back parking lot at work wasn't plowed yet, so I took the svx in it to see how it'd handle. There was about 16" of snow on the ground, didn't get stuck unless I stopped and tired to move again. I didn't have to get out of my car, just had to wiggle and spin a little. But yeah, don't stop and you should be fine

Spelling right is over rated the whole point for spelling right is so other people can understand what your saying, if you can understand what is said, the words were spelled good enough.
