iris valve (tumbler valve thing) not working??

#1 Was reading over some posts and saw something about checking the check valve and making sure it still good. I did that, but the area looked like someone had been in there before and unpluged stuff and tried to plug it back together.

#2 After testing the check valve I grabbed a mirror and positioned it to where I could see the iris valve linkage and rev'd the engine up to 5k and didnt see the arm move at all. Is there a certain situation that the valve opens or does it function any time the RPM's go up? Keep in mind this is my first SVX, I've been a subaru owner for 15 years, I've built hundreds of EJ18, EJ22, EJ25, EJ25D, EA82's but never a EG33. If I'm mixed up on how the valve functions please correct me so I can get pointed in teh right direction on this.

Thanks in advance for answers.

Where is this (IRIS) check valve thing at? I've wanted to check mine, as I have some problems that may be associated to it, per another users advice. Anyone have a pic or diagram?

It is on the underside of the intake manifold. I remember seeing some pictures in someone's locker...I'll update if I find them.

If you decide to ever remove the intake manifold (for any reason), it would be a very good thing to take a good look at the valve as they're prone to cracking. Also replace your vacuum hoses..

Hi , The IRIS valve is open at idle, closes at about 2200rpm to provide Inertia boost. Opens again at about 4000 rpm to join both sides, to form the Resonate induction plenum.

Harvey.

Re: iris valve (tumbler valve thing) not working??

I have a weird whistling noise at like 2000 rpms and it lasts til about 3500. Only thing I could figure that its a vacumn leak. it only at certain RPMS when the car is moving (under load) None of the parts stores around here have intake gaskets so I guess I'll need to get those ordered up first and then I'm going to park the car and pull off my intake, replace all injector o-rings and vacumn lines

Anythign else I should do when I have the intake off?

Re: iris valve (tumbler valve thing) not working??

Id give your EGR passage and main intake runners a good cleaning. A clean intake chamber allows for more air velocity, meaning a noticeable gain in power.
