So, figured I'd kick things off in this forum.

Anybody had a odd vibratting noise at around 2500rpm-3000rpm? Sounds like its coming from the rear of the car. Not real loud, but figured I'd ask. I dun actually own an SVX yet, but this is happening on one of the ones I'm thinking about buying.

Does it sound like a coffee can full of rabid bumble bees? If so, have someone rev the car while you listen just in front of the passenger's side rear wheel. Does it seem to be coming from there? If so, you've got the famed "resonator buzz." Most of us who get that buzz, simply have the resonator removed at a local muffler shop and replaced with straight pipe. Cost is between 25 and 50 dollars (depending on geographic location), or around 500.00 for a new resonator.

Heatshield

Could also be the heatshield. Mine buzzed abit when i had my new muffler put on, the simply have to bend it back or even tighten it. They may say its not hitting it, in which case remind them that it tourqes(but im sure that your delearship has an once of brain cells, unlike mine)

heat shield buzz vs. resonator

i have the 'can o bees' between 1900 and 2400 rpm. very annoying.
i'm taking my car to an exhaust shop next week to have them check it out.
are there pictures out there that show exactly where the resonator and heat shields are located?
i assume that the shop is competent, but i'd like to remove any doubt.
thanks a bundle.

i looked under my car today and noticed that there is a chamber after the cats, but before the muffler. i would therefore assume that this is the resonator. as for the heat shields, which of these are the ones that tend to rattle? it looked like the exahaust tube was encased with shielding at points that 'sandwiched' it and then there also seemed to be a larder shield just above the muffler. when people talk of removing their heat shields, do they mean all of these or only a select few?
sorry for the long post, but that noise is driving me nuts.

replaced resonator

I had a freakish buzzing, rattling, grating, sizzling, ratcheting, (and so on) ... noise coming from underneath my SVX. It was intermittent, but at its worst under hard acceleration and/or when the car was cold in 1st gear and accelerating lightly around 1200 RPM. It was starting to drive me nuts, and I kept procrastinating.

Anyway, yesterday I finally took it to a local exhaust place (Kwik-Way on Kiely in San Jose). The guy there obviously knew his exhaust stuff -- though he had never worked on an SVX -- and determined that in my case it wasn't a heat shield; something was loose inside the resonator. He had the resonator cut out and in its place put an 18" Blue Streak glasspack.

After 1 1/2 years, the noise is gone. Hallelujah!

I haven't noticed a major change/increase in exhaust tone or decibel level. I also haven't noticed an obvious increase in power, though there may be a subjective increase -- I'm no longer embarrassed to step on the gas! :*)

buzz update

i finally got a chance to take my car into the exhaust shop today. they tightened the muffler, blew out the debris that was rattling in the exhaust tip, took off the right heat shield that is just before the Y, and replaced the resonator with a straight pipe.

aaahhhh, it's nice to have a rattle free car.
the note of the exhaust seems to have dropped slightly while the loudness factor increased a little. as for the power in the 5-6K range due to the lack of resonator, i seem to notice a slight loss, but really haven't been able to take it full board on the highway yet.

all said and done, it cost $40 at PJs Muffler (they're in chico, ca). thanks for all the advice from the postings and live chats.

Finally! Another SF bay area member!

Have you ever heard of Dyno Sport in Mountain View? My friend the Audi S4 driver said a lot of the Audi guys take their cars there. Which mechanic do you go to for other stuff?

there might be a loss, or it could be that since the sound of it rattling is absent, it seems like it's slower.
so what i'm saying is, i can't confirm whether it had any effect on the power.
btw,,,,the longer i waited to get the rattle taken care of, the larger rpm range it affected--until it was occurring basically every time i accelerated.

Matt,

As a matter of fact I have heard of Dynosport, but I've never been there. Oddly enough, I take my SVX to Carlsen Subaru in Redwood City, as I've been dealing with them for eons and so far have had good luck with them.

Actually I've been taking my SVX to Carlsen Subaru also (I'm not particularly fond of any of the Stevens Creek dealers) but I am looking for a new place to go. It seems every time I take the SVX to Carlsen they give me a new reason to go somewhere else. Please let me know if you hear of any other good mechanics in the area.
