AC Compressor Clutch Bearings
The bearings in the auto clutch on my AC Compressor is going out. It is making a horrible racket!!! When I turn on the AC, it is silent, but when the AC is turned off, the noise is back.
My question is - can the pully and clutch be taken off and bearings rebuilt, or do I need to replace the whole clutch, or do I need to replace the complete compressor? Thanks for the advice in advance. (but I guess it depends on what kind of advice I get )

I just did this, and yes you can do it, but I don't think that's exactly your problem.
The clutch bearing mounts on the nose of the houseing and spins whether the ac is engaged or not. There is a big electromagnetic donut that goes on first, then the clutch pulley (which rides on the bearing at all times), then the clutch plate is pressed onto the compressor shaft. Mine would growl and whine at all times because the bearing is always spinning. I guess it could be the bearing if it's loose and turning on the magnet causes it to move inward. I got a rebuilt clutch for about $150 (part cost), but the bearing itself just costs about $17-20. If you can pull the clutch off and get the old bearing out, you can just press in a new one and reassemble it. The compressor is "zexel", but my mechanic said the clutch looks like a basic NipponDenso. If you can live without your car/AC for a few days, I would say pull it apart (requires pullers) and see what it is. Much cheaper that way. CJ |

Thanks
I can live without the car for a few days, so I can get it to a friend who has a press and can do the job for me. I will try that instead of replacing other major parts.
