The manual button could possibly serve a purpose when you're on ice, especially going up a hill or in stop and go traffic. The other day on an icy road, I was able to get all 4 tires spinning without much pressure on the gas peddle. Although with snow, slippage has never has never been a problem for me.

Significant Technical Input
Jose, can you see?

I think the shifter came from the leftover parts bin. "Totally Worthless Button" takes up more space than 'Manual', voila!

A good use for that button, for all of the 5 speeds converts, is a Nitrous switch!!

SVX Commuter,

You appear to have found a practical use for this feature and something I have had in mind but not got around to testing. This would stop the tranny constantly hunting for a gear in traffic and must have a practical advantage. You have given me the incentive to give it a proper trial - thanks.

Starting in second in very slippery conditions does make it easier to control wheel spin and one would do this with a manual ( that word again ) gearbox. Have I hit on the answer to the label !? Don't think so.

I don't dig the Mopar dig.

Actually it makes sense...Could have been a little simpler though. My Sebring had a button to turn the overdive off which was recommended for mountain driving. No need to overwork the tranny. My tiptronic in my Jetta is great because you actually do get to take over and shift (without the clutch of course) and I'm usually in 2nd and 3rd. As for starting in 2nd gear in slippery conditions, makes sense, but I seriously doubt I'll ever use it here in California They tried to cover all the bases and I'd say they did. I'll have to put it to the test in the mountains now that I know what the damned thing is "supposed" to do...My owners manual did not say jack about what it does just that the manual light comes on when pressed and the manual light goes out when depressed....WOW!!!!!! What a revelation!!!!! You know, I thought that's what it was doing but I wasn't sure until the book confirmed my suspicion.................

slippery starts

I can say from experience that the 2nd gear start is phenomenal for slick surfaces. Living in the snowy (yes, I did say snowy) part of New Mexico (yes, I did say snowy and New Mexico in the same sentence), there are a few mornings every year when the snow is just coming down like there's no tomorrow. Roads where I live are quite twisty and hilly, and they get slick FAST! Anyway, driving to work one morning I came to an intersection for which I had to stop on a slick surface with a grade. To let you know how slick it was, I was fearful of fully stopping...thought I would start to slide backwards. For this reason I kept a slow creep going as I approached the intersection. But, wouldn't you know it. The only other car out at 6:30am on this type of day was on the main road with the right of way. I had to stop. So, I stopped, let him pass in his large SUV, put the SVX in 2nd with "manual" selected, and started up no problem. There have been other times when my 2nd gear manual selection has been able to pass areas where our '96 Legacy got stuck just minutes later. Ahhhh, nothing quite like driving my sports-luxo in heavy winter storms.
