Re: soon to be back in a SVX again

My hood is in the flat black stage now. Was a Carbon Fiber. The clear coat kept fogging and I am not a real fan of the look anyways.

Re: soon to be back in a SVX again

picked up the exhaust on Monday this week, but it was 5 degrees out. Tues was 15, Wed 15, wind chills -10 etc
It warmed up to 33 Friday.
Today got to about 50 degrees mid day, 53 now at 5:45
Today I was able to get the exhaust put back on. It was not 100% perfect on the bends, was BARELY able to get the pipe pried over to reach the manifold bolt hole, but it is all bolted on now, including the original hanger up middle by the trans pan. Everything is factory, all the shields etc retained in place. My bottom CAT shield was MIA when the car got here, but I was able to make a shield out of metal. Would be nice to get a oem one on there someday for the bottom of center cat.

-on jackstands, the outer left front axle boot is toast. (I have spare 91-94 Legacy boots are they the same?, I will reboot it if same) The right axle is brand new oem Subaru (green cups even)

Now It is quiet.
one tire leaked out while up on jackstands for the last 3weeks waiting for the exhaust pipes to be made, but took air, will see how long the air stays in there.

Warmed the car up in driveway, checked radiator for leaks where I patched the hose neck that got cracked in the wreck before I got this thing (sleeved it on the inside with metal tubing, and epoxied with some gold copper silicone whatever it said for radiator necks and waterpump necks). Took the car around the blocks. Roaring rear wheel bearing, pretty sure the right rear…got it out on the highway in front of town up to speed for a section of about 1/4 mile.

Thats the first I have really driven the car since it got unloaded off the hauler in page 1 on this thread. Still no cel's

Going to call for inspection Monday, they do salvage inspections on Wednesday, but since Thanksgiving is Thursday the officer may be gone for Vac. In the past, they have had me drive there like 2, and 2 times they have come to my house, so that was why the test drive around my town in case I have to drive it there, the 9 miles, and then back

probably going to order the wheel bearing kit sometime by end of month or first of DEC (just sent big bill to my CC for the Haulmatch delivery of this car to Iowa from Florida), unless someone has one on their shelf that they no longer have use for, if so I would buy it.
-so my short list is:
1. rear wheel bearing
2. front axle boot
3. wet sand hood from my paint job
4. Replace "D" light which is out
5. set the clock, and radio presets to my liking

6.maybe replace front bumper cover (if the rest of the car sorts out I will do it)
7. repair a seam tear in lower driver seat (or replace with a good one)
8.
9.10……1000

Re: soon to be back in a SVX again

Sheriff just came and did the inspection of paperwork, inspection of car repairs, etc.
I have passed the salvage repair inspection, and will have time to go to the courthouse tomorrow after work and get the registration and the "Prior Salvage" title issued, and stop to put insurance on it.

Yay…..
I will be putting some pics on here by Turkey day ……

Re: soon to be back in a SVX again

Changed oil today, Castrol Syntec (full synthetic 5w-30) and a wix 51334 filter

Here are some pics i have been saying i would have up.
I painted this hood myself, with rattle cans that I ordered from the Bumper Store.

Looks decent to me. I did wetsand with 2500, 3000, 5000, and 7000 grit. And it has been compounded one time. I will compoun it again in spring, and then I will put a coat of Liquid Glass on it.

I did order a front axle for it (oem Subaru) so will be installing that this week when it gets here if it stays warm enough to work in a non heated garage

I think I have about 2600 into it at this stage (1100 of that was shipping it here from auction)

Re: soon to be back in a SVX again

How is it running? The hood looked off until you took the side shot. Must have been sky reflection. What is the Bumper Store. I would like to get paint and do my bumpers. Was it a code color match?

Re: soon to be back in a SVX again

Going to hope warm temps into the 30's get here Friday, and will attempt to install this before evening on Friday (front axle oem)

I read a few threads on installation.
Just loosen end nut, pop out the 3 ball joint bolts to lower control arm, drive axle pin out at trans stub….
what about the shock mount upper or lower, and will i need to undo tie rod?

Re: soon to be back in a SVX again

new left front axle has been installed today. Torqued to 135ft lbs.

While that tire was off, I took it to the station to have them fix the leak, i located the leaky place (that was the tire that would leak down in a week or two), they found a very small end of a nail buried in the tread, removed said object and put a patch on it.

Torqued the wheel to 80ft lbs.

Ran the car over the Toe Machine, noticed it had positive toe, about 3-4 degrees , also my steering wheel was at 1 o clock when trying to drive it straight.
So, adjusted left tie rod half turn, and when went to adjust right tie rod, UT OH, it was BENT. (might be accident related or from forklift at auction, etc, nothing else was bent luckily. So we straightened it some (need to address that again in the future) and got it adjusted so toe is a little less then ZERO, and the wheel is a little off to the 11:45 now, but I know what to do on that (1/4 more turn on right side, will bring steering to center and to zero toe. just got tired and I am run down getting over a little sickness still.

Couple test runs, first time at night. My headlights were not aimed right, too high on both. got them adjusted down, now need to fine tune it some, and clean off the front inside window.

Put a little gas in her at the station for the first time. 93 Premium Amoco, but they put ethanol in it, so only put in 5 gallons to get me to and from work monday, will put in straight premium no eth at another station on way home from work.

Next up, rear wheel bearing is roaring. Going to order that stuff soon.

Probably will drive it Roundtrip to work the 50 miles on Monday or Tuesday.

I painted my hood, with the spray Paint I ordered from a place called "The Bumper Store" They sell regular Sherwin Williams custom matched paint enamel paint, in regular rattle cans. It was the only place I found selling Polo Green paint in enamel for our cars, online (the other place sells laquer paint-not as good of paint as enamel), and they were cheaper than the local places.

-----ON Ebay, the seller name is "aircardcorp"

I first ordered the small touchup paint form them to see if they were legit and it was good paint, http://www.ebay.com/itm/360969686796...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

The touchup 1oz paint got here in like 2 day.

then I contacted them to get the custom 2 cans …… It took almost 2 weeks to get the 2 cans.
perfect match, not quite, respectable and pretty darn good, yeah it is . The amount of prep work and sanding, etc, makes it turn out close to pro. Beginners, will not get good results, but if you have done a few repairs before, you only get better.
good luck

I just couldn't jusitfy paying a pro painter the almost 700 he wanted to repair the dings and dents in the hood, prep and paint. Not for a car I had $1200 in with a salvage title, that may or may not have other issues even worth repairing. So for 58 bucks, the 2 cans of paint, did my job. Now , with axle, exhaust done, and a upcoming bearing replace, if the car turns out worthy, then I may have it redone at a later point.

Re: soon to be back in a SVX again

rear wheel bearing and seals arrived.

Jacked up the rear diff to check to make sure I am spraying the right side bolts with pb blaster. Turned right wheel, yeah its noisy.

Turned left wheel well, guess I will order another bearing and start spraying that side too, think it is gone as well….

So, yes, I am spraying the right side. But need the other too. At least neither side has play, just noise.

Going to install this one on friday afternoon/eve after work. Also, going to remove all the grease in the new bearing, and repack it with red good stuff, not the vaseline like CRAP they ship it with that says ready to install. LOL they are a bearing company and want to sell bearings…..

So far I have torque stuff as:
axle nut 123-152 I will put at 145
lateral link 72-101 I will put at 85

-edit, and just ordered another bearing kit…hopefully it gets here saturday so can do it this weekend while it is still warm, got a massive cold front hitting us Sunday night. But Fri and Sat are to be warm sunday to until the front hits, then a big dive...

Re: soon to be back in a SVX again

cleaned out the new bearing today and repacked it with good stuff, not the crap they send it with (they want to sell bearings right) ..if you put it in with the stuff they pack it with, you will be buying more of their bearings over and over………do it once, do it right is my motto.

So. How do you repack a sealed bearing unit?
