Unhappy She won't start.

Well I was driving to my wife's grandma's house to say bye before we embark on a 2,500 mile road trip from Pennsylvania to California, and the car breaks down! It stalled suddenly and I was able to pull it to safety. I hardly noticed it stall. It was just like the power to the engine slowly died out. The lights all work, starter works, but the engine won't ignite. My first thought was the fuel pump. A buddy sprayed starter fluid in the intake while I started it, but that didn't work. Any other ideas? I'm taking it to the stealership Monday to find out what's wrong.

Also, I plugged in the blue wire to the plug by the inside fuse box to check codes, and it's only reading EGR (has been out for a year) and both O2 sensors, which I have no idea why.

So much for a road trip on Monday...

Edit: my gas gap makes that "whoossshhhhhhh" sound every time it's opened, and I can usually hear a gurgling noise from the rear of the car if I turn it to ON.

Re: She won't start.

Pull the fuel line hose going from the filter to the engine (easier than the one from the gas tank to the filter) and let someone crank the car up for you and see if gas comes out. If not, then you will have to go through THIS painful case.

Re: She won't start.

Yeah I'd try that too. Or tmw morning go and turn on the key and see if u hear the fuel pump. Give it time to de pressurize. Also could be a cam/crank sensor but if it's not throwing that code prob not that but don't rule it out 100% cus I've heard they have gone out and not thrown a code

Re: She won't start.

Dave, I had something similar happen while driving through OH a couple summers ago. It turned out that I had gotten some bad gas! Budfreak came to help me out, and we had also though the problem was the fuel pump. When he removed one of the lines connected to the fuel pump, we used a bottle to collect the gas that was pushed out by the pressure in the system, and we could see all kinds of dark murky sediment! From that we knew the problem wasn't with the pump. (Once I'd used up some gas, the ratio of sediment to liquid gas was enough prevent the car from running, and like you, I was left on the side of the highway.) To fix it, we simply replaced the fuel filter, added gas treatment, and I filled up the tank to dilute the fuel to a usable ratio. I was fine from then on for the rest of my road trip to CO and back. A year later I did need to replace the fuel pump, though.

You went with the easy way. I removed everything from the tank, and cleaned the inside with a towel. You simply cannot imagine what I removed from inside my take from debris, to black mud to water/oilish liquid....

Timing belt was just done 2 weeks ago by Nate. We shall see. She's in the shop now getting diagnosed.

Re: She won't start.

So, what did the problem turn out to be? Did you resolve it and get on the road to CA?

Re: She won't start.

Belt jumped a few teeth. They're putting it back in time now and seeing if it starts and runs. I guess the tensioner went bad

Re: She won't start.

At least it was something simple and easy to fix! But why did it take the dealership so many days? Did they have to order the tensioner, and wait for it to arrive? Were they too busy to look at your car right away? Did you have to find another way to California and leave your car here?

Maybe Huck could win a yellow soap SVX!

Re: She won't start.

They were swamped with other customers. I didn't take it to the dealer, just my local garage, the Sube Shop (Morgantown, WV). The tensioner was just worn out. They put a used one in and sent me on my way for $150 Word of advice: if you're replacing the timing belt, idlers, gaskets, and everything else; don't cheap out. Just spend another $50 on a new tensioner. Lesson learned
