Engine will be pulled

I saw the car doctor and there's a small oil leak. Not sweat, but a leak. He thought it could be a washer or gasket, some sort of ring at least, from the block close to the flywheel. He did not think the leak would pass my next MOT inspection in august. To fix this, he said the engine must be pulled.

As I need to change my belts and water pump, I'm not resisting.

He suggested that while it was out, we should change (valve?) covers.

So now the question to you, dear sirs, is what else is a quick win to do while the engine is out? He said he'd come up with a list but I'm sure you guys will come up with even more.

Re: Engine will be pulled

Depends on the number of miles on the engine.

Valve cover gaskets and grommets for cover bolts

PCV valve in intake

Timing belt

Timing belt bearings

Water pump

spark plugs

Timing belt cover gaskets

Cam end gaskets

Yes, everything that Bill said. Maybe a good time to replace the vacuum lines under the manifold as well.

Re: Engine will be pulled

I've just been through the same exercise. Spent about $US1200 on parts at Hansen Subaru.
Timing belt kit (incl all tensioners).
Water pump etc
Main engine seals
Rocker cover seals
Flex plate upgrade (from 2mm to 3mm)

Re: Engine will be pulled

Head gaskets. If you are pulling it anyways given the cars age and mileage just do it. Much easier than dealing with issues later. Of course it could be perfectly fine and not be needed.

I plan on doing the same when i do my 5spd swap, just pull the engine and transmission together, pop off the heads for new head gaskets, do the valve cover gaskets, new rear main seal, front main seal if its not to much of a pain in the ass, wonder if getting the heads hot tanked would help with valve/lifter noise?

I am not sure if that will help to be honest.

I saw towoha from IDCN. Very nice and easy going guy. He thought the oil leak wouldn't pass the "EU kontroll" and pulling was the better way of fixing the leak. It's some sort of expanding or flexible seal ring by the output shaft. It goes dry and leaks.

Parts... probably US. The shipping is quite steep but since I need a lot of stuff that's much cheaper in US, it should work out OK. The US waterpump will be machined and fitted with the third node. I think it's like $70 and Subaru NO wants NOK4000 for more or less the same pump.

Thanks everyone, i'll send your lists to the car doctor so we can work out a plan.

Just so you know, it is a VERY tight fit for the auto to slide out with the engine, but it DOES fit. It has to be tipped pretty steeply and wiggled around some but it will come out through the hood. A 5MT will drop right through and back in with the engine, the 6MT is very tight like the auto but will fit also, although I really was doubting it when I did mine until I wiggled it just right and it dropped through.

Re: Engine will be pulled

i have to say, i would disagree with pulling them together. its much easier to just pull the engine, then pull the transmission. engine takes about 45 minutes to get out, tranny another 30 or so.

Re: Engine will be pulled

Bump.

I'm preparing the list now for more opinions and parts catalogue.

The compiled list so far:
Valve cover gaskets and grommets for cover bolts
PCV valve in intake
Timing belt
Timing belt bearings
Water pump
spark plugs
Timing belt cover gaskets
Cam end gaskets
Main engine seals
Rocker cover seals
Flex plate upgrade (from 2mm to 3mm)

Maybe Head gaskets
Maybe a good time to replace the vacuum lines under the manifold as well

As for gaskets, wasn't there a full kit ?

Re: Engine will be pulled

actually cheaper to buy the engine rebuild kit from Subaru, as it has all of the gaskets.

You might also want to check the condition of the knock sensors. Replace them if their cases are cracked.

Bill, does this rebuild kit have a part number or something? Google doesn't turn up much.
